Ireland's call/ A soldier's song

Rory was right to get rid of the flag he had just won the us open in the most unbelievable way the last thing he needed was to get involved in a political row! Plus I think he well and truly considers himself northern Irish so holding a tricolour for him would be like an English man holding up a Scottish flag. I understand and appreciate that is not the case for everyone in northern Ireland-which is very sad I think!

Not all of Ulster is in Northern Ireland, don't forget Counties Monaghan, Cavan and Donegal. All three counties are in the Republic and part of Ulster. The Red Hand is also used in lots of Gaelic football crests as well as some undesirables...

The Red Hand was always a great game to play before or after football training...you waited until someone had their top off abd their back to you and you gave them the best open handed slap on the bare back...left a lovely Red hand mark. Bloody stung a bit lol

I am originally from Tyrone, whose GAA team uses the Red Hand and my Dad played football for Ulster, so I know all about the Ulster/NI issue.

The problem is that the word 'Ulster' has been commandeered by those of a political persuasion different to mine to an extent that I now recognise it as alien and I associate it with the UDR, RUC, Orange Order etc rather than as an ancient province of Ireland. I always correct anyone who refers to me as an Ulsterman. I don't recognise the Red Hand flag and I have an Irish passport, but I don't wave tricolours either.

I have just looked at a map, and i see that Donegal etc is in a different colour to NI. I never new that was the case. See you can teach people without getting OTT etc.

I'm originally from Monaghan and living in the West of Scotland since 1996 you would be surprised how many people I have explained that to so Im glad to be of help :-)

The amount of peoe from Dublin, Cork etc that think Donegal is in the north would frighten you as well. You have an excuse of coming from a different country they don't!

The most northern part of Ireland is not in Northern Ireland. It's easy to see why some might get confused

Aye Malin head direction?

usually up that neck of the woods at the donegal rally this past weekend but the rain put me right off!

id agree with most in the thread that we all have different backgrounds etc but wouldnt neccessarily be a flag waver!

im from northern ireland, have only ever know the tricolour as the flags of other countrys like the republic/france/italy etc but as ive grown up ive started to realise that the differences are all politic now. religion has very very little to do with it.

i wouldnt have the union flag or anything else, because offending anyone isnt worth the hassle. my family is british and if someone considers us immigrants or whatever thats ok i can understand that mentallity, personally i didnt chose to be born in northern ireland! im actually glad i wasnt born 50years ago!

We are all people and Irish and British people are just the same, without asking someone whatever they believe(or think they believe) or what sports they were brought up to play you simply wouldnt know.

some people are my equal, most are better.

Very true , the arguments start when people try to shove their opinions on others , at get togethers i try avoid conversations on religion or politics , the way i see it ,you are as entitled to your opinion as much as i am , its great if people can discuss it and agree to disagree but some on both sides never will , so it ends up in a row . and a row at a get together like that will cause more problems than it will ever solve ..
