Increased bar prices

My club has announced that bar prices are going up by 10% but members can use a swipe card that will be credited with the added 10% when paying for drinks. The idea is that visitors pay the full increased price but members pay 90% with the other 10% put onto their card...presumably to be used over the bar later, so in effect you are paying the increased price but getting a discount on future bar purchases.

I don't use the club bar very much but will be using it even less in the future!

Your club wont last long if everyone thinks like that, the bar is a major source of income for clubs.

And it isn't like you have to put on a hundred quid at a time. Just put a fiver on, you massive tightwad :cheers:

I enjoy the bar in my club as much as the golf on the course.. every Saturday in the year is always a good laugh with great banter.... i dont care about the cost of beer, we got a card system and it makes it cheaper than going to town for a drink in the pubs.....

1. Your club is increasing bar prices for everyone except members
2. As a result you, a member, will use the bar less
3. However, you don't use it very much at the moment anyway

Hence the need to increase prices!

They have to put the prices up, they could have done it accross the board and it would not have been 10% but they have protected the members, very nice of them in my opinion. I would be happy with that to be honest.

Not a clue what price the beer is at our club, just keep putting money on the swipe card at the end of the day all the takings go to the club so i dont have a problem

Not being a member of a club with a bar all i can say is even when i visit a club i dont have a pint as i usually have the car. Although if i did have a drink i would not stop simply because they are keeping the prices the same ?

:rofl: That is pretty much what I was thinking! You dont use the bar that often but will use it even less now the prices haven't changed. The reason the prices have went up is members dont use it Will you be happy when they have to close it as no one uses the bar?

I have only just joined a club and it's about £3.30 a pint (I think) and i know I could get a tinny from the shop for less, but I will always have one as golf for me is about meeting new people and being sociable as much as wacking a ball around. Why wouldn't you even pop in for one.

I'm not a drinker myself, although have recently found out about the delights of King's Ginger during a round to warm you up and calm the nerves a bit. Usually stick to good old orange juice and lemonade after the round and enjoy going into the bar after a competition but am always absolutely mortified at the £3.80 charge for a pint in our place.

Apparently a few years ago the owner doubled the prices and has since pretty much lost all his business, people still stick around for one afterwards but they used to hang around all day, watch the football and get drunk. We, as members, get a 10% discount but it doesn't really equate to what I would consider a competitive price for a drink. What ever happened to members clubs being cheap for drink?

In an attempt to keep the golfers in the bar longer, last summer the owner did a Pound-a-Pint deal during the two footy matches that were on. The place was packed out and had a really good buzz about the place. The problem was, although all the beers were a £1, the soft drinks stayed full whack, so for people driving and non drinkers like myself, it was pointless.

Consider yourself lucky, my club doesn't even have a bar. We can use the facilities of the restraunt next door (independant from the club) and are offered a discount with our membership card, but it is a small discount on full restraunt prices. Not normal club prices

Simple answer to that!! Don't drive and don't be a girl and not drink!!!

In all seriousness though, I have to drive to golf as its around 30min drive away and would cost the earth in cab fares and also there is no chance of HID getting up that early to take me and then collect me half cut afterwards. And as Swanny says £3.80 (including the 10% discount) is quite steep, but most of us are willing to pay this as we like the buzz and the social side of a beer or 2 after the round.

I would love for our club to drop the prices, but during a recession, the cahnce of that are slim.

As to the OP, as previously said by others, it makes no sense to use it less, as the prices are the same and over time you will save money. I can't understand your problem there at all!!

We have a bar card with 10% discount. I don't usually drink after a round as I'm driving but we usually have a bite to eat etc. to be honest you can't get to our course without driving as its in the middle of nowhere!

Agree completely. We may not be happy paying more, but with green fees/guests paying more, it keeps our membership fees down. What would we moan more about?? Paying £4 for a pint or our annual membership charges being increased? I know what I would prefer!!





Now where's that £4 pint I just ordered!!

Nope, you're 100% right.

I work in the hospitality trade and outside of Central London, I will hardly ever complain about the price of beer, because I know how much it costs to buy and even the prices in Central London, although some are ridiculous, are needed for the rent/rates costs which are extortionate! It's not cheap, and as Dodger says, golf clubs are a business and are there to make a profit in order for us to continue enjoying their course and services.

Dodger, surely a golf club is there to be run at it's best, for the course to be immaculate and for it to be at the cheapest of costs. To top it all members have to gripe at it.

Is that not the rules?????
