If you were in 4" long rough grass, would you opt for the chip out with a high lofted iron then continue as normal, or would you go for it with a rescue/utility club?

I tried the later on the 18th yesterday and it cost me the game :o(

From now on, unless i can see the full ball, i'll be chipping out. Another golfing lesson learned... the hard way :o(

If I was in 4" rough and could only see the top of the ball, I'd use a high lofted club and just get it back on the short stuff. Utilities are great, but even they have their limitations.

We have a lot of heather at our place, and you'd be supprised how greedy people are trying to get out of that. I've seen it ruin plenty of good cards.

Chip out for sure.

I've been greedy quite a few times (it's human nature) and tried to blast the ball out of the thick stuff.
The Pros may be able to do it but mere mortals, well, we have no chance! Normally, getting deeper into it is the result.

:) absolutely.....

Not a problem around Augusta though

I was in the long rough on the 2nd at Lewes on Sunday. Nice easy 7 iron will get my brand new Pro V1 back on the fairway no problem.
I "Ravi'd" it right and didn't see it again....blob!

I concur - it has to be a chip out and hope for a good recovery and maybe a single putt. Better to score a single stableford point (or bogey in medal) that nothing and a 7 or worse on the card.

If it was a friendly game and I was playing an old ball and it was a shot I thought I had a 20% chance of pulling off then maybe a hybrid and see what happens

Kick it a couple of times until you can get your driver behind it.......

Ooops :o

( get it on the short stuff asap - carding a bogey but doing it 'proper' will give you a better long term score either way.

If you attempt the miracle shot and fail, you cock up your card. If the miracle comes off, you'll most likely keep pushing your drives to the limit, and find yourself in deep doodoo in 3 holes time anyway. But escaping with just a single shot gone will warn you not to push too hard, and sensible play to 80-90% of your limit will keep you carding a nice handy total.

In theory anyway )

It is pretty undisputed, and rightly so, that getting it back on the short stuff with an iron and taking your punishment is the sensible option in this situation...

If it were me I would attempt the hybrid most probably! Unless the lie was truly awful. It makes the game more interesting at the very least, even if this exact mentality is probably playing a major role in preventing my handicap threatening single figures! I just love the feeling you get when the 'impossible'/ stupid shot comes off. Yes on one or two holes it will result in a needless 7 entering the card, but at the moment I can just about live with that.

Always depends on the lie, but generally its an iron shot for safety, more lofted club more safety, but if you are crap in the rough anyway just use the golf bag!

4 inch long grass - I think I want a croquet mallet.

question though, how do you play it when you're tucked up into a clump of grass - hit as hard as possible and pray?

If its stuffed up in the way I think you mean I might consider hitting across the clump or even back but if there was no real chance of gain doing that I would just spank it with a lofted iron.

Hack out with a short iron.
Use your rescue from semi rough, not the deep stuff.

Each person views the situation differently hence different club choice , to go with what another says could prove costly . because you should choose for yourself .

If you happen to live near fields [like i do ] that near simulate the conditions it will help you in the long term

It is very subjective as it really depends on how well the individual understands the lie and what will happen when the chosen club comes down to strike the ball if you get it wrong. It is something that needs to be practiced but not a lot of people do practice it. Knowing where to get the club head hitting the ball for the most effective result is something some golfers overlook and is why they sometimes end up seeing the ball still at their feet or burried a foot ahead of original spot after a shot :D

The most annoying thing is when you know what you should do and how to do it but dont! :o :D
