In the market for a TV

Another vote for the LG C1, we got the 65” last year and it’s brilliant. Can’t comment on the sound as it’s run through an AVR but the image is faultless.

Same, I should have said, the inbuilt speakers of all modern panels are rubbish and I don't even consider them in the purchase as I always run everything through an AVR.

For what it's worth, the LG OLEDs have become a de-facto standard reference display in the games industry. I don't know of anyone not using one in their HDR setup in the past five years, they really have been the class leader in that professional-consumer price range.

But this app works fine on other TV makes and Sony admit it's an issue they need to address. Not having earphone Bluetooth connectivity is also their problem.

Yes - the issue is the app's compatibity with the version of Andriod the TV is running. This year's Sony TV's didn't have BBC iplayer until Christmas cause of an issue between Google and the BBC. The 2020 LG TV's didn't get i player untill 2021. Same reason - BBC don't priortise sorting it out cause it's just one brand.

Like anything, take your time to set it up and you will get good results, rush it or just use the default settings then you may get adverse results.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is an AVR? is it the same as a soundbar?

AVR is an Audio Visual Receiver, often referred to as a surround amp. It has no speakers so is not like a soundbar at all. It's a "proper" surround sound system (IMO soundbars are crap and any claim to provide "virtual surround" is also crap, having tried many the best they give is decent stereo and some 'directed' sound but it just sounds like it's all coming from the front, because it is).
Don't get me wrong, sound bars have a place if you are stuck for space or don't want to either hide cables or have visible cables running to speakers. All my cables are run either in walls, ceilings or under the floor giving a nice clean look, my speakers just look like they are floating on the walls.

It's a matter of preference like many things, but actual, real surround is what works for me.

Does anyone know if this is a setting, or do I finally win the argument for a new TV and this is gone? It’s on TiVo, prime tv, Disney+, must be the TV and not the accessories.

I bought that TV for the London games, so it is 10 years old already.

I like to buy an oled one which at some point might support a sound bar (hdmi arc?).447A6C0A-2322-42E1-9520-F23859E14A25.jpeg

It’s about the dark top, not the upside down image ;-)

I have an LG oled which I love, but the app store has a more limited range than Apple, Google or Samsung.
As an example, the GCN+, eurosport and channel 4 apps are not available.
I get around it by using the web browser, but that might not work for something that you particularly want.

We have an LG OLED (a GX model - the type that mounts right up to the wall) and it's a nice TV.
One possible downside is that because it's not an Android TV you can't sideload apps that you might want.

I think it's model dependant. The All4 app isn't available for our GX (2021 model), but I've seen it on the golf club's big LG TV (don't know what model that is).

Are you saying it is on the inputs but not when viewing DTV via an aerial. If it is the same when viewing via an aerial the only idea I would have is is that it is a backlight problem and the cost of a fix justifies a new TV. I had a similar problem with a Panasonic TV and the local repair shop quoted me more to fix it than it cost.

Best bet really is to try an AV forum quoting make and model number.

Cheers. I googled it yesterday and someone posted the same problem, how they opened it up, and it was one of the platings with the HDMI slots being lose.
I didn't open but gave all HDMI cable a good wiggle and it solved it. Probably not permanent, but I am denied an upgrade for the time being now.

Update: now it is bad again and shaking the TV doesn’t help anymore.

Have you tried connecting a Firestick or other similar external device, Panasonic no longer update the apps on my tv and 4K does not work from the inbuilt apps so I use a 4K Firestick.

Went to RS today and ended up ordering the LG 55’ oled C variant.
Got the LG sound at at half price as well. Will be upgrading that to something better at some point.
All should arrive next Saturday.

I hope you find it a good telly. My aging Samsung is getting gradually worse, so I may well be buying an LG C1 at some point.

Think this is the most recent new tv thread.

I know diddly-squat about TVs but I’m in the market for a 55” one. Our budget is about £1000 maybe couple hundred more max.

We have a Yamaha Soundbar (a few years old and not a hugely expensive one was about £200) but no idea if tv sound is so improved it might make the Soundbar redundant. We have Sky+ HD. Amazon Prime, Netflix.

Our viewing is ‘catholic’ and all-embracing. I watch a lot on Youtube, but no gaming whatsoever.

Currently got a 43” Sony, but thinking maybe LG OLED, but if LG what about LG QNED and NanoCell…whatever they are…and LG OLED evo?

Baffled and confused.

I'm not a telly expert, but I do have an LG oled thingy.
Very happy with the pic.
I use a sound bar (I prefer the sound, but I guess that's a bit personal).
Only downside is the apps available . Nowhere near as many as Samsung and those with a chrome telly environment.
For example, it never had the eurosport app, and doesn't have GCN+. Don't think it has All4 either. So might be worth checking - newer versions might be better.

One thing is for sure the sound, probably even from the best of TVs, will never be as good as sound bars and even those have moved on if you want to spend the money and if you really want the best sound go for an amp and surround sound speakers.

If you only have HD worth looking at if there is even any benefit in going the OLED route. Not enough knowledge myself. I can see the difference with HD and 4k when I use Netflix but sometimes I prefer HD as I find it more 'natural' as the CGI can be pretty obvious in 4k.

Excuse my ignorance but by ‘…only have HD’ what more could I have? Are there subscriptions for Sky or others that give 4K or whatever quality higher than HD (I don’t even know that’s a valid question 🤔)
