Played today at Aylesbury Vale - my potential new club and I like what I see. if you read my post on the image of the golf club thread, you'll know what my current club is like.

Well AVGC is everything that my current one isn't! The course is great, the tee markers are quality and pointing in the right direction, the fairway distance discs are correct (according to my SC) and the changing rooms don't look like a pub toilet!

The course was not in good nick - very heavy rain as I set out left huge puddles all over the fairways. I was picking up and placing in the rough to avoid getting splattered! the greens were wet too although they were pretty true. Some nice short par 4's mixed with some longer ones. Most of the par 5's should be reachable come the summer but no today. The par 3's are really nice, plenty of slopes and tricks. And I shot 81 (+9)! 40 out 41 back. Nothing worse than a bogey and even managed a birdie. Happy days

Got absolutely drenched after 6 holes but enjoyed every minute of it. if I like it in this weather I'm going to love it in the Spring.

So, come May 1st I shall be off to pay my subs and a New Dawn in my Golfing life shall begin.

If we all did that we'd all be playing in single figures! :D ;)

I haven't played Aylesbury Vale, but I was warned off it by a couple of friends who have, they weren't too impressed with it, even in the summer it was in pretty poor condition, apparently. Maybe shouldn't say that having not experienced the course myself, and of course, that may very well have changed since they played there.

If you want to drive another 5 mins up the road, Leighton Buzzard is a nice course to play. I'm a new member there myself, if you fancy a round to see what it's like, let me know. As part of your Leighton Buzzard membership, you can also play at Buckingham, Chiltern Forest, Beds & County, St Neots and Milbrook for free, gives a nice choice of track.

Great news Imurg, hopefully you will have a new club in the spring. As I have said before I have played Aylesbury Vale and the course wasn't in the best of condition but the layout was what won it for me.

I believe this was the course Viscount and I played at. I enjoyed the course, they have some good water hazards and the first hole is quite welcoming in that it's a very open fairway.

I also remember the guys in the pro shop/bar being really really nice. Best of luck

I have played Leighton Buzzard, and there are a cracking 9 holes there, but the newer holes are not of the same quality, and are a bit crammed in. The closing holes through the trees are fantastic, and very tight. A great finishing stretch.

Congrats, Imurg. Not an easy decision so good to feel you've made the right one.
Is there any course not under water right now?

Sneds, you are correct Aylesbury Vale was the track we played, not spectacular but as you say the off-track experience was good.

I had to check, but I also played Leighton Buzzard this summer. If I have the right course there are distinct differences between parts of the course.
Is this the one with the interesting par 3 played down the cut in the trees with the front of the green completely blind?

Is it also the one where the 1st and 9th tees are right on top of the 8th green, hence much delay

and where it's a long, long walk between (I think the 11th and 12th) - one not to be lightly undertaken with mud on the ground.

At LB, I remember some tees teeing off over greens, but not which holes. You are defo thinking the same course. All the holes through the trees are nice, but then some are out in the open, and a bit cramped and dull. It looks like it was a 9 holer, which has been expanded on a tight budget. I quite liked it though (must have won or something).

Murph and Viscount are right, I think the course was expanded from a smaller course. The 11th plays downhill through the trees, the 7th and 9th tees do play back over the 1st and 8th greens respectively, doesn't bother me too much, have yet to be delayed for it, but I haven't played in any comps yet. There is also a trek along the outside of the 17th when going from the 11th to the 12th, but again, it hasn't been a problem for me yet, will see how it goes through this season.

There are a number of very nice holes on the course though, that make it interesting, at least I think so, the 10th, 11th, 17th and 18th. May not be enough for some but, I'm happy thus far.

Your welcome to come try it out if you want.

Glad you liked it and that it ticked the right boxes. However if I was you I'd take advantage of the offer to play Leighton Buzzard especially if you get the other courses thrown in as well

Thanks All.

Like the idea of LB but the joining fee of £1150 is a bit of a bummer!
