It kind of feels like saying "I'm an alcoholic". Coming up on 10 years back in the UK....I've been at 3 different clubs. I get bored I guess and move on.... There are several other clubs within reach that I wouldn't mind trying out, although at least 2 have a joining fees or waiting lists so that kills those choices. Golf nomads seem to have a bit of a bad reputation here in the UK. I can see the good side of joining a club and just staying there forever....but I don't think it is for me. I've almost stopped playing the last few months....I think it is partially because there is no place I can practice with the current club...at least the way I like to practice. Driving ranges are not good to me.

I'm not the only one am I?

Thought a nomad was someone who wasn’t a member of any club and just played pay and play courses or as green visitors

But there is no right or wrong - play golf how you want

You left your club now? I thought renewal dates would normally be April or May or something.
Nah.....I'm paid up to the end of the season at the end of March. I'm such a nut-case...who knows what I'm going to do by then. I think part of the problem is that I'm one of those crazy people who actually likes to practice.....maybe as much as playing. When I was at Knaresborough I would go in before the rollups and spend 45 min or so on the field before going out with the group. Another time or two a week just to practice. If I could just combine the best of the 3 clubs I've been at......Knaresborough has a perfectly pleasant golf course with a large practice field, Oakdale has a small practice area and I think is the best to play at during the summer, Ripon is probably the best all year-round course and handles the water better than others around here.

I might get hold of a couple of the guys I played with at Knaresborough to see how things are being run these days..... I get rumors, but no idea if they are true or not.

Or....knowing me.....I might just pack it in and take up a new music instrument.

My old club only recently went to April renewals for all.
The new place keeps the anniversary of joining, so September for me.
Seems like that would be a pain for the club to keep track of......hunting down every late payer and threatening bodily harm at the same time of the year would seem to me to be a bit easier.

I’m a bit jealous, you have so many good courses around you.

I don't really know what to compare them to. I don't get around much....which might be one of the reasons I get bored. I tend to just play at the course that I am a member at. In almost 10 years I still haven't played Harrogate, Pannal, Rudding, Wetherby. Played Scarcroft and Moor Allerton since they were reciprocals, also Ilkley since I got talked into a scratch Seniors thing last Spring. I tend not to play very often for the Seniors or other groups.....It's all in my head, but if I played bad I'd feel horrible (which I did at Ilkley).

So there’s no right or wrong, but he’s wrong because he’s not actually a nomad 🤣

I am the reverse - getting on for 40 years at the same club. However when I was younger I probably got to play 20+ times a year at other clubs through Opens, matches and County card which satisfied any wander lust.

Stayed at the same club because it is the best in the area (given all factors).

I love my club, coming up to 4 years there, have got to know plenty of people and I would hate the idea of having to leave and start again somewhere else. It's a bone of contention with my wife when we talk about about eventually moving home. Although I may be priced out of it if the membership costs keep rising, which saddens me.

We went to 1st April many years ago (probably 25+).

It is simple if you have not payed by 7th April you are no longer a member and have to apply to rejoin, if we have a waiting list (which did for several years) you have to go on that.

I have never been a member of any golf club. I enjoy playing different courses and have no interest in the social side or comps. I repair my (and others) pitch marks and divots, I rake bunkers and play at a good pace. I get the impression that some people are sniffy about nomads because they think only people who are club members are 'proper' golfers and have any idea about etiquette and caring for the course. This is clearly not the case given how many unrepaired pitch marks I see at every course I play. Members must be responsible for some of them at least.

It would appear that you make little use of the Yorkshire Union events costing just £20. For me, Union, EG events & a couple of visits to Seaton are a large part of my golfing year. Would be bored silly if I was only playing my home Club course

Not played Pannal!!!

That’s heresy!! Or some other harsh saying of criticism / disbelief 😀.

Please do so, I think they over price themselves, but their Opens bring down the tee costs.
