...who was going to win The Open, who would it be and why?

I'd pick Darren Clarke, simply because I think the man is an absolute diamond. Playing in the Ryder Cup so soon after his wife had died, and playing so well, is testament to his character.

He's got the game that has deserved a major win, almost but not quite Monty like, so if I had the choice....it'd be him!

Mine would be Lee Westwood, not least because he has stayed on this side of the pond as opposed to chasing the american dollar, i mean dream.......and he is a fine golfer.

On the flip-side i hope its isnt Rory Maclroy, i dunno what it is about the young man but he is beginning to rub me up the wrong way.

(The same way that Lewis Hamilton, Andy Murray et al are doing)

If I could pick ANYONE it would have to be Monty - I'd just love him to win a major.

After all those years at the top of the Order of Merit and a lifetime service to golf (and column inches) he still deserves it.

I wouldn't mind seeing Poults winning it as I've grown to quite like him this past year.
I'm a bit of a Phil fan too and think he needs an Open win to validate his career.

Aside from the obvious patriotism. It would be nice not to see Sergio crumble at the Open. So I'd probably plumb for him.

It has to be Monty -its sad that not winning a major is always mentioned in any discussion about him which is absurd when you see what he's achieved.

A few years ago, Monty....of course....

These days.....one of the "older guys" - Westwood/Clarke or perhaps a younger player who has never quite lived up to the potential, so yes Poulter, Casey, Gmac, Dougherty.....any really.....

Whys that? Because they are young Brittish guys at the top of their sport? Thats the only thing all three of them really have in common!

Id like Luke Donald to win The Open, he has such a good swing but just doesnt seem to have it upstairs!

I wouldnt mind seeing Sergio win, after coming so close the season before last, he has improved ten fold over the past few years.

I hate seeing an unknown winning the majors, its a big let down when a big name doesnt win for me!

I'd ike to see Ross Fisher or Olly Wilson, new breed of clean cut English golfers. It would give them so much confidence to kick on.
Next choices would be Casey or Donald for same reason as above.

Wouldn't be disappointed if Monty, Westwood, Clarke, Garcia or Poulter were to win it.

Westwood for me. A loyal servant of the European tour who could have gone stateside a few years back but stayed and has worked on his game to the point where he should/could have got into the US Open play-off. Also a decent guy who has donated several signed shirts to various charity events I organsied.

Other than him, I'd settle for Clarke (sadly I think his best days are behind him), Poulter for finally starting to play like a top golfer and not a perpetutating publcity machine or one of the nice guys in the game like Ogilvy.

My pick would be Paul Casey, just love the way he plays the game and strikes the ball.
He's a thoroughly nice guy too. Last year before one of the comps. he had a practice round at the East Sussex National, my mates Son worked in the Pro shop at the time, and he said how friendly and relaxed he was and having some good banter with him.

I would like to see Leftie win.
When he first came on the scene a few years ago I thought he was a right arrogant sod and didn't enjoy watching him at all.
I feel that he has mellowed a lot nowadays, and admire his "gung ho" attitude.
Either him or Lee Westwood.
But not Tiger.
