• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

I played today and..(Rolling) -originally created by JohnnyDee

Dragged myself down to the club, last Sunday before Christmas Day. Only 9 holes open, oh no the nutters will go round twice, very hilly front nine. I didn't fancy it so told everyone and just put in for Captains Ball thing. Half way up the 3rd, big hill, battery gave out, I'd not charged it up. OMG I got round but I'm shattered. Managed 19 points, lost my ball on the 1st after smashing the ball with my new 3 wood just right of the green, or so I thought. Gone. I'm glad I went. My excersise has been done. Feet up now before walking to sons for dinner.

Another +4, this one was much steadier, no birdies as I couldn’t get the ball to the hole with the flat stick, this also cost me two 3putt bogies, (one was really a poor club choice that left me miles short), the other two were after a chip out post drilling a tree I thought I’d miss, and then a topped 3w out of nowhere - aside from that I was in control the whole way round.

Out again tomorrow, let’s see if it lasts.

Miserable day here today - we had 11 holes open plus the 9 hole course but I wasn't feeling it after a late night at a Freemasons Lodge Christmas party. Our place shuts on Christmas day and Boxing day, so the lad has booked us a tee time at Huddersfield for the 26th - I'll need the exercise judging by the amount of grub we're doing for the crimbo dinner.

Got out this morning with a mate as I'm off work now til Jan. Quite mild weather, not too cold at all.

Front nine fairly steady until a poor chip on the 7th brought me a double - and a poor three-putt on the 8th brought a bogey when I should've parred. Six over front nine for 16 points.

Kicked into gear on the back nine - three straight pars, then a bogey followed by a birdie and two more pars meant I was still on for a level par back nine - until I somehow went out of bounds with 3 wood on the 17th. So a double there and parred the last for 21 points on the back.

Final gross score of 76, which is actually my new best score on my home course! And achieved in the depth of winter with only 11 clubs in the bag. Crazy.

When I checked my stats I saw it said I'd hit 91% of fairways, so the only one I missed all day was that 17th when I went out of bounds. Without that one bad shot it's a 74 with every fairway hit! Still, can't complain. 😄 Won the match 5 & 3 as well, mate had a bit of mare but would always have struggled to compete with my back nine I think.

+1 after 5
Even after 7
-1 after 8
Even after 16
+1 after 18

Bottled it, I shaved the edge on 15 to go -2, and at that point I realised I had a chance to shoot under par…. the bogey on 16 was from 80yds and an easy pitch, 18 I played too safe.

3 rounds on the trot in the 70’s, and the index should start with a 6 again tomorrow, Happy Christmas!

Great front nine this morning. A birdie and a couple of dropped shots for one over in very, very muddy conditions. Back nine a little scrappy, but still finished with 38 points.

And absolutely putted the lights out again. I changed my putter in the spring and, after a slightly dodgy period with it a month or so ago, it’s on fire again. I’m standing over every 15-20 footer expecting to hole it, which is a lovely place to be.

Early range session absolutely terrible. Couldn’t get a feel or get anything going everything was out of the bottom 2 grooves so was really low and spinny! Think I was just getting in my own way trying to work on to much at once. Finished up instead focusing on one thing and trying to get my club head speed back with the mid irons for decent contact and trying to keep my 7iron speed around 89-90mph. Ended up with some decent shots in the last 10 balls with high draws so I’ll take that and put the clubs away for Christmas.

Do I assume that the range session was on a mountain range? ;)

Bloody dyslexia and autocorrect are a bad mix 😂

But in this case considered it combined golf and work training for going back into the snowy hills of Norway with good clubhead speed 😂

I’ve now edited it to correct my thickness 😉😂

Played yesterday. 1st full round for a couple of weeks and playing off the shorter winter tees. Zero shots from these tees and managed a three over 73 for 33 points. A bit wet in places but course not too bad considering the recent wet weather.

The game is coming back, which I really appreciate......but now that I'm playing at my first club again I'm winning the money......and I feel a bit guilty. Today, solid 36pts playing off 6. But....one of those strange things...I've won a couple of times with 30pts because everybody else has a bad worse day.
