I played today and..(Rolling) -originally created by JohnnyDee

Played a fun Ryder cup warm up thing this morning.
I didn’t know one of the lads I was playing with but he was moaning on WhatsApp before we even started.
On the 1st tee he moaned about my handicap and it’s first time i have ever met the bloke. 😂
We played 9 holes Fourballs & 9 holes singles. It was agreed we would be generous with putts for a half to keep it as close as possible and get round a bit sharpish.
He even moaned that we gave him a 6 footer on the 1st for a half.
We all come back to my mates for a few drinks and grub and he ain’t turned up.
He has put on the WhatsApp he isn’t coming as not in the right state of mind.
The organiser has deleted him and informed him by text he isn’t welcome back.
The bloke that invited him is getting pelters from everyone else 😂.
Golf was great fun and both my matches finished all square

Society day at my old stomping ground The Zoo aka Whipsnade...
And it appears I've taken the win for the 2nd week in a row....a nice steady 37 points with 20 on the back 9..
Just as well as count back came into play
Notched up a birdie and could easily have had 3 or 4 more....
A 2 handicapper had 4 birdies and an eagle a d still only came in with 36........😲
A grand day out.......

Strokeplay today, boo. Very scrappy early on, trying to put into place my recent lesson but not quite getting it right. Scrambled around, just hung on. Managed to reset after about 12 and then thoroughly enjoy the rest. Finished well, always good to do.

The redeeming factor throughout, I putted really well today. Shortened my stroke, it definitely helped.

4BBB strokeplay today. Didn’t play great, partner was worse, nice 3 club wind and multiple pin positions that were stupid like hanging 2 yards from the side and back on a hill with a 30mph cross wind.

Net 72 for us, winners with a 66.

Roll up Stableford yesterday - tee'd off late at 14.10 as I was out with a guy that runs a barbers shop so works Saturday mornings.
Been playing rubbish, didn't expect much - 16 points on the front nine which should have been more - Pick up on the 7th with a lost ball. I suspect somebody on the 9th played my ball in error as it was nowhere to be seen in the area I'd hit it, but there was a ball in the fairway bunker which I'd carried - the trail in the sand matched my theory.

Played solid on the back nine - messy 13th hole but I canned a 25 foot putt across 3 foot of break to salvage a point then parred my way in for 23 points coming in.

Played this afternoon before the Ryder Cup. Somehow forgot my bloody golf shoes and didn't quite have enough time to go back and get them. 😖 So I had to play in a pair of slip-on Skechers I was wearing that are about 4 years old and have the least grip you can imagine - completely fabric, and it peed down for the entire front nine. Terrific.

Somehow, despite that, I played exceptionally well. 😂 Front nine was a bit wary of my feet slipping, ended up with a double on the 7th, but birdied both the par 5s (8 & 9) with lovely up-and-downs from the 40-50 yard range. So that took me to 19 points on the front nine (four over).

You might have seen my posts lately about following great front nines with rubbish back nines - I promptly duffed my tee shot on the 10th into the ditch on the left. But I had a reasonable lie, and no shot with it being a par 3, so decided to chip it out of the ditch - hit a beauty onto the middle of the green, and sank the 10 footer for a miraculous par. That settled me for the back nine, and after two bogeys I then went on a run of four pars in a row, including sticking it to 10 feet with driver on the 215 yard uphill par 3. Unfortunately I made a mess of the 18th, with a god awful toed tee shot and a three-putt.

It was only after the round I realised that doubling the last cost me my best ever round at my course. As it was, I matched it with a 77 - 37 points total (seems ridiculous to only get 37 points for matching my best score but here we are). And all with ridiculous slippy shoes on. 😂

Putting was night and day better than Friday as well, excluding the miss on the last. Should be a cut back to 12.1 again I think. (Edit: 12.0 as it turns out.)

Popped down to Minchinhampton for the weekend. Played the Avening course on Saturday, I was a little let down with the condition of the course and general layout.

Played a mixed open on Sunday on the Cherington, Greensomes, the Mrs and I shot 38 points which was good enough for 13th out of 57 pairs. we played with a couple who were mid 20's and on the front 9 they matched our score or bettered us. We received 13 shots in total compared to their 25 was an interesting experience seeing them par every par 3 with ease!

Played the final of my work society knockout on Saturday. I was giving 13 shots to my opponent and knew I needed my A game.

I made a solid enough bogey on the 1st but lost it due to giving a shot but I then made a great birdie on the 2nd, followed by another on the 3rd. A par on the 4th wasn't good enough with my PP making a par with a shot. I then sunk a 25 foot putt for birdie on the 5th!

A silly double on the 9th meant I was 1 down. A par on the 10th got us back AS, another birdie followed on the 11th, my opponent couldn't believe it, haha!

The next few holes played out back and forth which left us AS after 16. I made a stress free par on the 17th to go 1 up and hit a perfect tee shot on the 18th, my PP getting a shot, made a mess of his 2nd and 3rd shots and picked up his ball and shook my hand. It's the 2nd time I've won it in 3 years which I'm delighted with.

Had the opportunity to fit in seven holes this pm. As I’ve been struggling hitting 6i I took just that one club; my putter, and two balls out. In truth my putter was there just to keep my 6i company…I wasn’t bothered about putting.

Bunker shots were a bit tricky…but after a few goes worked out what to do…didn’t always work first time but hey. Pitches over bunkers were easier. But these shots were just for fun. The point was hitting 6i off tee and fairway - and for that it was a worthwhile little exercise.

I remember being at a friend's house for dinner one night. They live on the 4th fairway of our course. We went out and played a few holes with one club - I took a six iron. It was amazing how easy it was to reach a par 5 with three six irons, and no stress. (wouldn't work today as I'm 30 years older!)

I’ve been reflecting on how much ‘better than normal’ I was hitting my 6i. I can hit it on the range fine but on the course…I make a complete dogs dinner of things.

So how come… I was thinking as three nicely hit 6i find me over the back of our 510yd 1st…

My conclusion is that when standing on the tee or over the second shot of a 510yd par 5 or 460 yd par 4 there will be no thoughts on ‘controlling’ the shot, my only intent will be to hit the ball as far as I can…straight obviously. And maybe having no ‘controlling’ thoughts there is little or no club manipulation going on (that’s a long standing issue I have) and so I just let it go back as far as I can and swing the club freely (that was my thinking anyway).

Now that’s a lesson for me. Because there is no hole that from say 170yds I do not have a club that I can swing freely and fully and hit the green. The truth is that our greens are small and I really don’t have to be ‘going for the flag’ - so any green maybe 20-25 yds deep I can swing a full shot and get it on the green. Ignore precise yardage as that’s a distraction; choose the club I can swing fully and freely, get it on the green then just two putt. Sorted.

Well maybe…🙄🙂

It was our 36 hole medal on Sunday. I shot 83, 75.

The course and setup was out of this world good, possibly the best I have ever seen it. Both incredibly tough but also very fair. Greens were immaculate and probably running at 11.5-12.

I just wish I could find a bit more courage within myself. In the 2nd round, I started with a birdie. I then had an easy birdie putt at the 2nd hole, which I left short. I then left a 15ft birdie putt short on the 3rd, and after a great drive on 4, I underclubbed my approach, then left my eagle putt way short and made a par.

It’s like I hold myself back, but in doing this, I am avoiding doing anything stupid. I come up short with so many putts and leave myself with tap ins, and when I try to get it to the hole, I invariably miss the return putt.

But you can’t shoot a great score if you leave all the good opportunities for birdie (which I had worked hard to earn) short.

Got out after doing the school run .. I didn’t push him out ! Honest.
The course was deserted - no one in sight for 4 holes no one behind. I checked to see if it was open 😳.
I then started okay nothing strenuous just a steady drive then a chip and run onto the green .. and 3 putted 🙄. But it was all okay played some nice golf but I need to tidy up in places. The fairways are being seeded so are GUR, I found myself driving to the edges.
But all was good with a round that was beautifully peaceful in lovely weather.

Got out for nine holes at 4:30 - beautiful evening, sun setting with not a breath of wind. Won't be too many more of these left now sadly. Golf was reasonable, only annoyance was doubling the 7th in exactly the same fashion as I doubled it on Sunday. 😆 Chipping was either very good (to two feet) or terrible (just about duffed onto the front edge) with nothing in between. Finished with a lovely up and down from 90-ish yards to save par after taking a drop, so that'll do. 👍🏻
