Sunningdale Heath on a freebie via a supplier at work - great day out, decent food, warm up in the sim and then played in lovely September weather, played ok too, tricky little course but far exceeded my expectations.

Even got to peek through to its bigger brother…..
 
Went out yesterday morning with a mate who was out early, 9.30am, and he kindly let me join him and his mate. I wasn't going to put a card in, but he usually does, so.......I did. Started bogey, double bogey, double bogey, bogey. Then........from out of nowhere the pars came flowing. Shot 42 out and 41 back. A nice 83 and a cut of 0.7. That's the last card I'm putting in now this year.
 
I had another pretty poor round in the medal yesterday, but there was a highpoint - a birdie on the 18th. The only birdie of the round, but fairly crucial.

We have been running an eclectic for these Tuesday medals - your best score on each hole and subtract 50% of course handicap.
That birdie got me from joint second place to joint first place.
The chap I'm sharing the lead with shot 67 - 2 = 65 to win the medal yesterday, but his birdies were all on holes he had already birdied.
There was PCC of +1 and his score differential was therefore -4.1 and his HI is now 0.3. He is very good!

The eclectic has run from 1st April and it is the final round next Tuesday 30th.
Five holes I have not birdied.
Of the four holes matey has not birdied, three of them are par-3s. I find this odd for such a good player. But it does give him a very good chance next week.

Playing in a lot of these comps over the year has clearly improved my chances. Who knows what next Tuesday will bring?

St George's Hill yesterday, unbelievable golf course, straight into my top 5. Fairways were showing signs of the hot & dry summer, but greens were brilliant, and we barely saw anyone else all day! We started on the back 9 and my game was pretty steady and turned in +4, on the back 9 my game wasn't as sharp and I missed it in the wrong place a few times which cost me a few doubles.

Not a cheap day out, but worth every penny.

Great place to play with some beautiful holes

My eclectic for this calendar year isn't particularly impressive. I've only birdied 8 different holes and parred the others, so -8 / 60. There is one hole I've birdied 5 times though funnily enough.
 
6 over around Black Mountain, left a heap out there but a great day, my caddie brought an esky full of Leo stubbies all iced down, perfect for a hot day on the course, now off for an hour massage costing less then 10 pounds, then ribs for dinner and onto meeting the guys at the local bar.

Over how many rounds is that?
Mine is for 17 Tuesdays only - 13 holes birdied.

Over 36 comps in total this year, I have birdied 16, an eagle 2 on one (the 14th) and one hole that is par only. 18-under.

I've also eagled a par five, but that was in a betterball comp and I got my lowest score differential of 2.6 for that round.
If I were to count that one, it would be 19-under.

More often than not I leave a puddle somewhere, but not been in that situation - so far.
 
Today I played at one of my favourite courses, Beau Desert in a ladies team open, The was in lovely condition but the greens were far trickier than I remember and I usually paly there once a year. Maybe it was the pin positions that made them so hard to putt on or maybe we just consistently finished up on the wrong side of the flag. Either play, although we all played decently, once we got on the greens all four of us struggled, it did not however take away anything from the enjoyment of playing the course.

I did have a bit of a revelation regarding my own game and rising handicap. Although I drove well and hit decent 2nd shots, I was often 40 yds short of several greens, clearly this is down to me losing distance as I age, But I have gone from being on or close to the green and general taking 2 or 3 more shots, I am now left with a shot I have never been confidant with and consequently often take 4 more shots. That is clearly a shot I need to practice.
 
Played today in a works society at Woodlake Park. Didn’t like the course, too many blind shots over hills, probably 75% of the par 4&5. Also, we were 2nd to last group and round took 5:25 (target for 4ball is 4:15). We were waiting on every hole but the 2 groups immediately ahead were als being held up. We think the culprits lost 3 holes but, of course, when we got to the bar no one would admit this.
 
Last qualifier of the season at mine today, we had a mixed tee stableford and so I decided to play of the shortest tees for a change, wish I hadn't bothered. After fast smooth greens at Beau yesterday, our greens were really slow and bumpy, in fairness still in recovery from renovations week. While it was nice to be able to hit irons for my 2nd shots instead of my 3 wood, the par 5s off the reds were all long par 4s of the shorter tees and were very tough to play. I finished up with one of my worst rounds for quire some time.
 
Forgot to post this. So I didn’t play today I did something else but I did play yesterday 🤣

Played at Alton in Hampshire, one of the lads from work came down to play and my brother came down for a knock as well. We had a little skins game going, first time I’ve played that in years.

Firstly the course, at 5,622 yards and a Par 68 parkland course it’s not the longest, 9 holes with 2 sets of tees. Usually not a fan of that style but I’ll admit a couple of their tee placements did change the layout quite well especially 1 & 10, 1 plays as short par 4 but 10 completely changes the angle and plays as a 210yd par 3. The rough isn’t overly long but it’s thick was easy to lose a ball in it and my mate did several times more of that in a minute. Premium is definitely on accuracy and though it’s short it has some sneaky dog legs and it’s quite hilly so in some cases there are carries you had to make to clear the bundu and due to the undulations it can alter the distances. Plus the greens are cheeky, not very big targets to hit but with slopes that make putting something that needs focus.

So to the round. My mate rocked up play with his newly acquired Wilson Triads but lack of accuracy led to 3 lost balls in the rough in 6 holes 🤣

Myself, first few holes was a struggle, still had a tight shoulder from the other day and was fighting with anything 5 iron or longer trying the essentially steer the ball rather than swinging through it. Managed to get round the front half in +3 hitting pretty much 3/4 shots. Made a good par at the long Par 3 10th hole , followed up with my dreaded pull hook appeared with the driver at 11!! Scraped a bogey there and another at the long 13th left me +5. Then I don’t know what happened but 14th my shoulder loosened up and was able to swing freely again and played the last 5 holes in 1 under par to finish my round 4 over for the day and a gross 72. Which was good timing as that will replace a round in my best 8 so will see if that leads to a cheeky cut 🤞 and left me in a good place for today’s ball fitting.

Onto my brother. What is there to say he’s a joke! Plays off scratch (used to be lower but doesn’t really practice anymore) hits it miles and has the short game of a Spanish genius it actually makes me sick 🤣 he hit his driver twice all round, and shot 65 without breaking a sweat and no surprises took the money so we made him buy the drinks !

All in all a fun day with 2 great people at a pleasant little course.

Fun "Ryder Cup" comp this morning with Greensomes matches. Me and my partner (14) were giving 5 shots to a 16 and a female 17. We played really nicely tee-to-green but neither of us could get the ball in the bloody hole on the greens. We were up a couple of times on the front nine, but 1 down at the turn after I missed a couple of three-four footers for halves, and my partner hadn't done much better either. Meanwhile our opponents were draining absolutely everything. Before long I was a bit fed up of it and my head was gone early in the second nine so my driving started getting a bit ropey as well. Ended up losing 4 & 3.

My putting was genuinely abysmal, worst I've putted in a long time. But we were assigned Team USA so we lost on purpose obviously, didn't want any bad omens. 😂
