I played today and..(Rolling) -originally created by JohnnyDee

I didn't play today as the first round of The Moray Open was fogged off.

(Quite thankful really with the rain that came down in the brief times it wasn't foggy🤣)

Felt sorry for the few groups that did play a few holes and then got called in.

First round now rescheduled for tomorrow...at least it looks like the weather will be better.

Another repeat of last Saturday, good round with 38 points but beaten in to second place by someone scoring 42 points. However this player does this score a lot but I cannot complain too much as he puts in a card every time he plays.

Out early, played the front 9 twice as we have course maintenance this week and the back 9 was closed....
Greens are, well, they've just been cored and sanded so no time was wasted on the greens....
Hit the ball decently, tried a few things, had a chat with a Roe Deer and watched Mr and Mrs Buzzard set off for their morning soar....
18 holes, all that and home by 8
Full course open tomorrow but no cards until Friday to give the greens some space...

Well.after yesterdays fogged off golf I ventured back on to the tee this morning at 9.30 on Morays New Course

Dismayed to find the wind had shifted 180 degrees from the days before and my plans of playing mini-driver off the tee for the first few holes downwind were scuppered.

Started off with a couple of bogeys before hitting the pin with my approach on the 3rd, missing the 10ft birdie putt but securing the firsr par of the round. Bogeyered the 4th after finding the bunker off the tee before birdying 5 and 6 to go back to 1 over par gross. A couple of solid pars followed before I stood on the 9th tee and proceeded to hit one of my worst drives of the day...no height at all and it found the burn only 170 yds from the tee, A nervous third shot saw me come up short, and it was followed by a tentative 4th...eventually closing out for a double bogey and a 3 over par front nine.

The back nine started off solidly before bogeys on 12 and 13, but with the strengthening wind now largely behind us I was able to play the closing five holes in level par gross. Three good birdie opportunities on 14,16 and 17 went begging but a total gross score of 75 (nett 65) was very satisfying reward for only hitting 2 loose tee shots all day.

Fellow competitors both played off 1, one of whom played exceptionally to shoot 69 gross (par 70), the other was less fortunate, with the occasional pull left into gorse seriously hampering his scoring, ending up with a gross 78.

Second round tomorrow on the Old Course.

Cracking day at our annual trip to West Lothian GC for one of their opens. Love this place, would come into the hidden gem category for me.

Started slowly, oddly tense and I paid the price. Pulled myself back into it and finished with a solid 36 points.

Even more exciting, they had 2 x nearest the pin prizes and with just a quarter of the field to follow I was leading them both 🥳🥳. I've never won one of those, surely the other players wouldn't be so mean as to get inside both of them 😭. Just one would be enough, I'm not greedy. Results out tomorrow I believe, obviously I won't be sleeping well tonight 😬

If you are putting a trip together in Scotland and would be passing Linlithgow, play this course. It will make you smile and is great value.

Played this evening and putted much better than the weekend but the greens are so slow just now. If I had putted like this on Saturday that first round 78 would likely have been a 73.

Registered for a GP round before going out and was thankful I did as I shot 74 for a differential of 1.3 with a 5.5 falling off. Should be another good cut for me.

Had to deal with 4 really heavy showers that lasted a few minutes each time, we could see them coming in off the sea, was pretty neat to watch.

Appreciate your improvement! Your approach is different than those who complain of 'losing strokes". Well done.(y)

Thanks. I only play to improve, I just want to see how low I can get my handicap. I honestly don’t care about winning any comps, if I beat my handicap and get a cut that makes me happy enough. I’ll have a whinge if I have a great round and someone beats me though. 😂

Got cut to 2.2 after yesterday’s round, got a real case of imposter syndrome now. Couldn’t even break 80 6 weeks ago, get a new putter and suddenly start holing putts again and the confidence comes flooding back.

You sound a bit like me.
I'd sooner lose having played well, than win having played badly.
It's a self respect thing. (y)

2nd round of the Moray Open today...this time over the Old Course

Woke up feeling awful...would like to say it was booze related but I didnt drink a huge amount yesterday and actually stopped around 6pm, drinking mainly water all evening. Anyway, threw up a couple of times before heading off to the first tee...great preparation.

Was shaking stood over the ball but managed to hit a decent tee shot, 7 iron to the green and two putt for a par that I wasnt expecting. The 2nd was a balls up after hitting a poor second shot and then compounding the mistake by being overly ambitious and finding a greenside bunker, eventually carding a double bogey 7. More bogeys followed on the 3rd and 4th (3 putting this one) and then a double bogey on the 5th (another 3 putt).

That was generally the story of the day as I slowly leaked shots due to not committing to the stroke or an inability to find the correct pace on putts....unlike yesterday when most stuff dropped, today I holed just a single putt outside 5ft.

Ended up shooting a gross 86, nett 73 which, added to my round yesterday gave me a combined nett score of 138 which when I left the course a couple of hours ago was the 2nd best combined nett....top 32 nett scores will qualify for the matchplay so I'm pretty confident that there wont be another 31 scores better than mine....projected cut for the matchplay was around 144 when I left.

Will amble down to the club later to see what the final score is but looking like an early start for me tomorrow I reckon.

21 points in our 9 hole league today. Will see another cut I think to 10.6. Really pleased as I was (obviously) happy with 21 points a few weeks ago when I was off 14. To still be shooting that many points must mean there's some continuous improvement happening

Popped out for a few holes last night to escape the chaos of work, zero warm up, eagled the first.... added a birdie but offset by five bogies, the last two were 3-stabs! Overall happy with a 73.

Lost in the first round of the Moray open high handicap matchplay section.

Details shortly in the thread where folks agonise about what might have been in a match.

For those not interested...lost 1 down on 18.

I played well in our medal today, mostly.

I got of to a steady start with no hiccups, bogey, bogey, par, par, bogey, par, par, then on the 8th from a good lie thinned a 3 wood into a ditch then compounded the error by 3 putting so a double bogey, parred the 9th for a respectable 41, one better than handicap.

Started the back nine par, birdie then on the par 3 12th hit a poor chip after missing the green, but then contrived to 4 putt from the fringe from no great distance for a triple bogey, undoing the good work of the previous 2 holes. On the 12th I missed a 2 foot par putt, albeit a tricky downhill slider, 3 putted the 14th after hitting the green, then went bogey, par, bogey before 3 putting the last.

Gross 84, nett 72 so on handicap but once again losing so many shots on the greens

Played yesterday for the first time in 4 weeks. 24 folk in the fuddle. I kinda said to myself take it steady. I shot 21 points on the front nine and left a few out there.
Back nine, 3 points on the 10th and was flowing. Then I got to confident. 3 blobs on the next 6 holes and I was spitting feathers.
Last 2 holes I parred them for 38 points.
One of the guys shot 25 points on the front and another 23 on the back.
Chuffed to bits for them.
First time I have been under Hcap of 20 for a long time.
Currently 18.9 take a bow son.

I played in an open at Childwall yesterday, my friend and I recruited a 3rd for the team from Facebook, who turned out to be fairly new to golf so we spent a lot of the round trying to give her tips, i didn't play too badly even putted decent put had one of those days where nothing dropped. I was pleased to finish with 3 pars which included two long 2 putts both from 3 putt territory.

Played a couple of persimmon and blade events Thursday and Friday at Fleetwood and Heysham in Lancashire.

At Fleetwood I played a 1930s set which weren't the best in terms of gapping but I managed to get into the upper 20s Stableford so not a complete disaster.

Heysham, however, was a complete disaster. I'd collected a set of HB&S Pinseeker clubs on the drive up that had been advertised on Facebook, nice set complete with a Ray Cook putter. Hit a decent tee shot on the first but things quickly went downhill, poor drives, usual sorry excuse for a short game and leaving a lot of putts short. Couldn't even muster enough points to get into the twenties! 😦

@Voyager EMH played too and managed to get the nearest the pin at Heysham, winning a nice wedge, hopefully he'll be along soon with a picture. 👍
