I played today and..(Rolling) -originally created by JohnnyDee

Went back to my old place last night for a round and I have to say the place was looking good. Was nice to see some green on a golf course and getting sheltered from the wind by some trees.
The course is the best it’s been in my 7 or 8 years as a member. The appointment of a Course Manager last year has made a massive difference.

Seniors Open at Longhirst yesterday. Played it once before, 6 or 7 years ago, in torrential rain, not the best of memories.

Nice sunny day yesterday, but pretty breezy. Course was decent enough tee to green, but quite a few of the greens had GUR areas on them, not sure if they have had some kind of disease.

The Dawson is a long course even off the yellows, got a bit boring hitting 3H into most greens.

It was a Texas Scramble, we were one over par gross, which was ok for 4 high handicappers, no idea where we finished as no results published (see irritations thread).

Played a medal yesterday evening at Dunbar, windy when we started but it just went mental for around an hour or so when we were on the 7th, on the 10th Par3 200 yards or so the 3 of us hit driver, we're all pretty good ball strikers, no one reached the green, on the 14th a long dogleg par 4 I had a 32 yard pitch for my second, a Senior shot 67 gross off 5 to win the comp, fantastic score 5 under 32 to the turn, he certainly must have played in the wind but it couldn't have been anything like the strength we encountered later on

The 14th is 432 yards off the whites so I drove around 400 yards, mental wind strength for mid June 😳

Played at a work event today at Moray Old, cracking day and played pretty well.
We had a pro on our team from Liverpool, ball striking was absolutely next level.
Great course but pretty tight so accuracy is everything.

First round of the Club Championships today. I had no expectations this year, just wanted to relax and enjoy the round. That still didn't work, I was 8 over after four holes. 😬 Parred the 4th with the provisional for a 6 though, and that seemed to settle me as I then played some decent stuff, parring 5th, 6th, 8th and 10th. Unfortunately another triple on the 12th killed any thoughts of a proper comeback, but still added good up-and-down pars on the 13th and 16th. After the poor start I just wanted to break 90 really, and in the end I was satisfied that I managed to achieve that, shooting 88 for net 76.

There was actually a symmetry in my round as both nines featured 3 pars, 3 bogeys, 2 doubles and 1 triple. Bar the sliced first effort on the 4th, my driving was actually not too bad on a windy day, and putting was mostly decent as well. Just a couple of bad shots and unlucky breaks did me in. Had two putts that literally died on the jaws of the hole. Ditches were found on each of the triple bogeys so two penalty shots there - two bunkers as well that took me two blows to get out of. So you can easily see where the shots were lost.

Oh well, back tomorrow and 88 is the target to beat.

Why is a medal so much harder than stableford? It’s the same game. Played some really good stuff for 14/15 holes today, but those other 3-4 holes just completely ruined the day. In a stableford I’ll generally score every hole, not lose a ball, not stress, and end up scoring in the mid 80s. Call it a medal, and I’m cacking my pants over every shot, don’t duff it, don’t race the putt past the hole, where’s the danger, don’t do this, don’t do that, etc etc, looking at a 150 yard par 3 thinking I could be 7 off the tee in the blink of an eye here! Stupid game.

I played a game with sticks and a ball - something akin to golf - but unlike golf what I played was a game that did not require me to use the sticks to get the ball in the hole in the minimum number of hits...it was similar - but the objective didn't seem to be to minimize the number of hits. Anyway...ho hum.

I got absolutely soaked. 5 holes out was totally drenched. Actually started playing better though chipping was an absolute nightmare with all the sitting rain.

I didn't think it was possible to play any worse than this - shows you how wrong you can be. Started better, two over after three, then sliced out of bounds on the 4th again, same yesterday. Made an 8 this time though. Death by a thousand crap holes after that, doubled 6th & 7th, parred 9th & 10th but it was short-lived as that was followed by double, triple, triple. Just couldn't be arsed with it really. Didn't hit a decent iron strike the entire day. Putting was worse than yesterday. Ended up with a gross 92, so net 80 (12 over). Managed to par the 18th so at least I walked out on a good one. That's literally the only good thing I can say.

Golf is all about traditions, and is certainly traditional to have my worst round of the year during the Club Champs, so always nice to keep that one going. At least I might get a shot back for my upcoming matches, as it looks like I'll be 15.5 or 15.6 by tomorrow.

4 ball better ball yesterday. I shot a 2 over and came in on 13 holes. I would have scored 37 points on my own. My usual reliable partner went walk about after six holes and we only scored 41 points.

Today was our ladies 36 hole Championship, I have been playing decently of late so thought with a bit of luck.... Well a 3 putt on the first set a very bad trend, I hit the ball well but on the greens, I was worse that terrible, I took 27 putts on the first 9 holes and had a gross 50, there was not sense to it, I was long, short, missing left and right and then missing the 2nd putts, when I did hit a decent first putt I missed for less than 2 feet, I didn't 3 putt every hole, I took 6 putts on the 7 holes when i had yet again failed to get down in 2 putts and I just lost the plot.

On the 2nd 9 in the morning I had 22 putts including 3 holes in a row where I was putting for birdie. So the first 18 gross 96 with 49 putts.

The afternoon round kept the trend going, another 22 putts on the front 9. Finally on the 28th hole I finally had a single putt and the remainder of the final 9 wasn't too bad just 16 putts ( I did have one 3 putt) and a gross 41 So all in all a bit of a nightmare. The winner had 2 very good rounds and even if I had not had all the 3 putts I would still have been several shots back.

Played the Dukeries Shield at Worksop GC this weekend. My first visit to Worksop and I really enjoyed the course. It was an individual open and I managed second place in my division so there's even a bit of credit in their pro-shop for me. :)

Yeah, I was impressed with the changes. Greens were much, much better than when I left 18 months ago, probably back to the level they were around 5-6 years ago. No complaints at all from me, it was back to looking pretty in the summer which is what you expect from the place.

Away day with the lads back up in Scotland at the weekend, we went up to Pitlochry. Lovely course, pretty hilly and greens were fantastic. Chucked it down for a fair bit of the round but I went prepared by Nikwaxing my waterproofs a couple of days earlier and they held up fine. Unfortunately my golf game didn't as every single part of my game fell to bits, couldn't get off the tee and when I did hit a decent drive my pitching was abysmal. Chunked 3 pitches in the 70-80 yard range about 30 yards, thinned one through the back and even shanked one 30 yards straight right. Must have had 4 or 5 3 putts as well. Even with a few beers in me I finished with an embarrassing 86 (without losing a ball) for a net 85 and I'm currently 16th of 16 in the club championship standings. Always next year I guess.

Played in a medal this weekend, 55 players in it.

Despite a snap hook and fat shots inevitably costing me big scores on several holes in nearly every round, after 16 holes I restricted my worst scores to bogey, and was four over gross at that point. Was a bit disappointed going onto 17th tee, as I missed a 3ft putt for par on 15th, and missed a 5ft birdie putt on 16th.

On 17th, I hit a hybrid down the throat of the fairway. As I walked up the fairway, I discussed my hooking problems with the guys I played with, and how I dreamed one day I could hit a fade. Had an 8 iron to the green for my second. Only went and hooked it out of bounds, and walked off with a triple bogey 7 :(

However, on par 3 last, I missed green short left, and needed to flop a chip over a bunker in front of a crowded decking area. Hit is lovely, rolled about 4 foot past, but I made the putt for a closing par. Gross 78, nett 66 (Par 71). Won the competition by one shot. Had I failed to get up and down on last, I would have lost on countback. Glad I didn't know that at the time, otherwise I'd have probably bladed my flop shot OB or fatted it into the bunker.

Job done, now to start working on a fade.
