Doubles stroke play event today. I was playing with a guy who has not long taken the game up, course handicap 30, playing handicap 24. He did well for his first weekend comp and chipped in with a few good holes. I played really well tee to green and if I could putt we might have been in with a chance but in the end we ended up with a net 68. Lads we played with had a net 64, one of them shot -3 on his own with a lost ball as well.

I hit the first 9 greens in regulation with the longest putt being 20 foot yet turned at +2. Threw away a few more shots on the back 9, missed 3 putts within 4 foot and had to take a penalty drop after hitting into a ditch that crosses a fairway yet again. Finished +6 but could have been so much better.

Just played Porthmadog on day 1 of our 3 day North Wales Golf trip - what a course.. Off to get walloped in the bar now. Nefyn tomorrow.

Second round of 3 over in a row. Playing some good stuff. Chipped in for birdie on 9. Just aswell as I still can't get some good birdie opportunities to drop.
Chunked my approach to the par 5 17th with a wedge in hand thinking only about getting it close and making birdie. Really annoyed at that as I was really concentrating. A cut isn't my go to shot but I was trying to bring it in over a bunker and just fatted the life out of it.

Still a good strong round for handicap and things going in the right direction this season.

Not much wind, fast greens it was a pleasure to be out there.

Played at Kinross, Montgomery course, today. Very enjoyable but a tough test at times. Small greens, small entrances, some severe double tiered greens. A good test though and the back 9 in particular was excellent.

A mixed bag from me. Generally struck the ball well but really struggled with putt pacing on the front 9. Managed to get the hang of it by the back 9, largely by reducing the tension in my grip. Doh.

Shorter length course tomorrow, looking forward to it. Staying in a hotel literally opposite the course so we will be walking to the first tee in the morning

Depends. I agree somewhat.

I took up golf as an able bodied bloke in my 40s. I promised myself I wouldn’t even get a handicap or do comps until I could get one that was non-embarrassing (which meant less than 20 to me). Zero criticism of anyone with a different view or approach - that’s just what I personally felt happy doing).

BUT - if the higher handicap range available now allows an older beginner, or someone (of any age) with a significant disability to play in regular club golf competitions that would otherwise always have been 20 shots beyond them, then I am all in favour.

I agree with your last paragraph and understand your reasoning about not wanting to enter comps with a really high handicap.

Personally I would have put in some GP rounds in and try to get h/c down before entering comps.

36 h/c to start is enough I think, some of our bigger comps are restricted to 36hc.

The guy that won went out in 47 including a birdie and in on something like 69 that shows his potential but also shows there’s a lot that needs improving.

He’s a fine lad and I’m sure he should get his h/c down shortly

Yeah, back nine is very tight. We played it in perfect conditions and not one player from 20 of us managed to play to their handicap. Cracking course though.

We did Nefyn yesterday - what a course that is.

Although not in a good place mentally, I played at Seaton Carew yesterday in a ladies team open, it was good to clear my head and play a very nice links course that was well worth the 2 hour drive, I played pretty well and we were in 2nd place when we left, so might get a slight return too.

Very strange round yesterday. Was going along very nicely with 32 points after 15, then managed to blob the last 3 holes. 5 blobs in total, 4 lost balls, a 2 and a great par on our SI 1.

Better ball stableford at ours this morning. Tough scoring in a stiff breeze and on very firm greens, but I thought our 43 points was respectable. We didn’t really leave any out there.

Well, at least we thought the conditions were tough. The leading pair are currently 6 points clear of the field with their 52 points. Which included a blob and three single point holes.

Go figure.

22 and 24. Started with a nett eagle for 4 points and just carried on from there.

A lot won’t enter 4BBB comps at ours now, especially the lower handicaps. This is why.

I try to avoid 4BBB comps because of the above posts. Sometimes though it is the only way you will get a game so I just try and play the best I can.

Summer golf is definitely here. I three-putted the first three holes, and then the 5th as well. There's a few holes you just cannot go long on in summertime, the 2nd is one of them and I did so I blobbed that, after a double on the 1st so not the best start. Other than putting though I was actually playing very well. Hitting driver mostly in play and it was running a mile. Managed to claw my way back to 16 points at half way - and that was with a missed 18-inch par putt on the 8th as well (whenever I start off putting badly it gets in my head). Only one down in the match, but then he won the 10th as well to go 2 up. I wasn't too worried though.

I continued to play well on the back nine and won the next three holes to turn it around - a very nice birdie on the 13th where I steamrolled a putt in gave me the lead for the first time. Had a blip on the long par 3 15th when I drove through the back and had an impossible down hill chip, hit it short twice as I needed to delicately just get it on the putting surface for it to run down to the hole, then of course I knocked it past and picked up my ball in a strop.

Fantastic par on the 16th, knocking 7 wood to about ten feet in the process, restored my 1 up lead, and then a nice par on the 17th secured a 2 &1 victory. Slightly ropey bogey on the 18th got me to 35 points as well despite the two blobs. Should keep my handicap where it is, as it'll be replacing my trophy-winning West Surrey round that falls off the bottom.

I'm very happy with how I'm swinging at the moment, if I hadn't have had a putting nightmare at the beginning that could have easily have been another sub-80 round (83 as it was). Usually a good sign if you can have a couple of mares and still end up with a decent score.

I enjoy 4bbb comps and waltz’s etc - any sort of team comp , it’s enjoyable

But I know with all the allowances they brought in we won’t ever be competitive

we don’t even bother with our winter league or captains cup 4bbb comps now
