I played today and..(Rolling) -originally created by JohnnyDee

Midweek seniors stableford today. Stood on the 18th tee having gone round in 75 up to that point. Needed a par on the stroke index 16 hole to break 80 for the first time. Hit driver as I had been driving well all day, rather than playing safe with, say, a 7 wood. Hit my drive left and lost the ball in the gorse/rough 🤬.

NR'd the hole, hardly worth going back to the tee and hitting another, so ended up with 39 points shooting (for HC purposes) a 9 over par 81.

Happy that I am going to be cut to 11.something, but frustrated that i missed a particular milestone I have been aiming for this season!

I was meant to be playing a match yesterday but unfortunately my opponent pulled out last minute, fortunately I was able to join up with a mate and get 18 in.

For context, I played on Friday just gone and despite shooting 81, I really struggled with my strike and pretty much thinned every iron shot. I went up to the grass range on Monday for 30 minutes and worked on my low point.

Yesterday my strike was back - I made 4 birdies, including back to back on the 2nd and 3rd - I chipped in on the 17th for one too.

Two silly double bogeys, from poor chip shots, threatened to ruin my round but I finished 7 over for a lovely 78 and (I know everyone says this) but I missed 1 short putt on the 10th, made a silly 3 putt on another hole and along with the doubles, the round could have and should have been a comfy 74.

Another round and another whole lot of garbage. This game is going to drive me to drink at this rate.

Brilliant off the tee, long and straight. Hit my irons well, I hit 13 GIR and the other 5 I was on the fringe. Putting? You’d think I’d just taken up the game an hour before I stepped foot on the course. 7 3 putts and a 4 putt from 14 foot and I’ve somehow managed to shoot +11 on a night were the longest iron I hit into a green was an 8.

Are the greens still recovering from early season treatment? Otherwise it'll be a case of getting on the putting green and doing some drills and working on the stroke. A four putt from 14 feet however is not very good

Well I haven’t yet…but playing in Thursday roll up. I don’t normally play in this as I find it a bit slow. Anyway…it’s a lovely day so why not. And so I find myself in a four with 23, 26 and 28 handicappers. We were all there once…I’m sure it’ll be fun - though in a group with these handicaps my 7 will set their expectations of me…🥰😂

I had not played in our club handicap knockout for about ten years, but this year I thought I might give it a go.
First round yesterday and our handicap indices are 3.9 and 13.2.
A difference of 9.3 and this meant I gave him - guess how many shots - yes, it was eleven.

Not played with him before - about 30 years younger - easily out-drives me.
We started on the 10th.
After being 2 down after 10 holes I managed to pull it back to level with the only shot-hole that I won - a par on our longest par 4 - and a birdie 2 on the 6th - our 15th hole.
The 7th, 8th and 9th are all shot holes.
He plonked it on the green on the par 4 8th (430 yards) with a drive and a 7-iron. I did not make birdie to half. Dormie one-down.
The 9th is our shortest par 4 (295 yards) and guess what - stroke index 11 - where a hybrid and wedge was all he needed and it was game over.

Really nice lad. Loves golf and lives very locally. Club needs more chaps like this to make it financially viable.
I don't believe he has handed in a qualifying score this year, but he plays regularly with his mates. I've handed in 7 and gone down from 4.6 to 3.9

I can see where I'm going wrong, but I find it hard to change from the habit of a lifetime which is to seek and gain satisfaction from playing well and seeing the handicap drop down accordingly.

Shan't bother with the handicap knockout again until I'm well into my 70s with a double digit handicap.

Have you tried a LAB putter at all?

31 entries in the midweek sweep and the highest male scorer at 35 points on a warm, calm night with barely any rough on the course. 3 women had 37,36,36 but never entered the sweep for some reason but paid into the comp. I've no idea why you would do that as I think the midweek sweep only pays on the sweep, not the comp winner. Bizarre choice to pay £2 for the comp with no hopes of winning anything unless they just wanted a score in a comp on their record for some reason. Anyway, I digress. I guess I'm not the only one that struggled on the greens. Pins were mostly hanging off the back or right at the front and by the end we were all having a complaint about the greens. Rock hard, approaches and chips run forever but the putts were much slower than the last couple of weeks. It's frustrating but I understand it's weather related.

The 4 putt was a shocker but I did run 2 yards through the back to a pin that was only 3 yards from the back. The first 6 inches or so of the putt was through what most would call a first cut but then it was fringe and green and I just whacked it 6 foot past. I knocked the 6 footer 2 foot past and then missed the 2 foot which didn't even touch the hole. Technically it would be a 3 putt from 6 foot but our fringes and greens just merge at the moment, everything is getting burnt out so I'm counting it as a 4 putt.

Well it was OK, but it was slow. I got impression that they were focused more on the friendly 4BBB match we chuck balls up for than on the individual scores - we all holed out unless we couldn't score so recorded an NR. I was doing fine (5 over gross) until 15th when I missed a short par putt. Then make a pigs-ear of 16 with a double...and dropped shots on 17 and 18. Darn. I'll put it down to me losing concentration as it was slow and very warm. But as the intention of playing today was to get rid of my bottom score of my 20 (as it's over a year old) then I'm OK with that. HI will go up about 0.375 as the 20th was a 6.7 and I replace it with a 9.7.

Surprised at that. Where I play all matches must start on the 1st. It affects when shots are given/received which in turn could affect the match result.

Hope you do not mind the edit to get my point across.
I was dormie 1 down and finished 2 down.

If we had started on the 1st and scored the same, I would have lost 2&1 because we halved the 18th - 2 down again if you count the 18th.

Team matches are always 1st hole starts. Club individual handicap knockout can be 10th hole start if both players agree.
It helps get the matches played if the first tee is booked from 4:30 to 5:30pm say for a team match on the day that the two players want to play.

But if you start at the 10th and finish all square, the sudden death play off must be the 1st hole onwards.

9 holes again tonight. Level until the last 2 holes which I proceeded to drop 6 shots on ..😱but then I had done 3 dump trips, shredded a blue bins worth of paper , mowed a lawn, cooked dinner for the family , done the dishwasher, put the washing on .. missed lunch because my wife was doing her first lesson since July last year … I was knackered. Probably lie awake tonight as well !!

Busy day so no wonder you dropped. Good 7 holes though

Surprisingly good had a 263 2nd shot to the par 5 after a not to shabby 270 yard drive … thought I would lay up with a 5wood to 50-60 yards but ended up being a lot closer than expected .. garmin doesn’t capture the duffed chip or the poor 2 putts 😳 … I hit a putt from where I was when I decided to see if my decision was daft, and it was the choice I should have made 🤭

I kinda think you need to go through a couple of near misses like this so that when it actually happens it just heightens the achievement and euphoria

Last year I had putts for 79 three times... & missed them all ! But not long after I chipped in on 18th for a 78 & went ballistic celebrating
I'm certain that the equivalent celebration would've been a tad more muted had one of those putts from last year rolled in

Let us know when it happens (y)

Good point. I was certainly bullish when I realised I'd cracked single figures and really enjoyed giving it back to all those nay sayers that said I practiced too much and I'd never do it. Then going out and shooting some scores in the 70's on a regular basis has cemented that feeling and everyone still feels like a personal triumph

Now that summer is having it’s positive distance affects, I am just working out my tee shots.
There are places where I can roll out into gorse or bunkers … so looking at breaking 80, perhaps it might be a case of looking at what you could have done better on the tee .. the odd blow up happens irrespective of plans this is bogey golf. But planning to avoid will always lead to better scores and opportunities.
