It began in November so I am half-way through it. There have been informal comments about doing another year but it depends on my own circumstances as I was planning to move from Surrey down to Devon at the end of this year. We will see. I have just had to cancel my Captain's Day and postponed the Club Championship for now until September. Guess I picked the wrong year to have the honour.

I'm in the same boat as you guys, up in the air what's going to happen at the moment
However I have gained a new nickname out of this "CaptainCorona"

One of the nicknames I could think of for PS. Actually in his defence I know how much he's put into the club and contributed to it and so I feel sorry him having Corona affect his year in charge and hopefully the club will do the right thing for him and all the other affected captains and give them an extension

I played 13 holes (should really have finished the 18 but it was getting gloomy and I was bloody starving). I scored 31 points on the 13 holes I played. It's the first time I have played the course in good conditions (I only joined just before the autumn/winter rains came) and it's clear to me that the handicap I got in those conditions (35) WILL come down. Out in 49 and then 5,5,6,6 on 10 to 13 (which includes the two most difficult par 4s and a par 5)...

Bloody hell I enjoyed it. Went to sleep thinking of the drive nailed down the long 12th and woke up thinking of the towering shot onto the 180 yard par 3 9th...

31 points in 13 after a 2-3 months off. You’re gonna be well popular in the weekend swindle at your new club, that’s for sure! Speaking from my experience at Sunningdale with the forum last year... ???

I know (hence my forum name)! To be fair, I've only had about 6 or 7 lessons since I came back to the game after a near 20-year break and I'm still very inconsistent. The pro who gave me the lessons laughed at the 35 handicap and said that it would come down fast. I'd like to get under 30 asap after comps start again. We'll see.

Once I get to the point that I have a more realistic h'cap - I'll remove the bandit part of my forum name...

Courses are starting to show up on Golf Now. The first one in my area was Sandford Springs but they want a minimum of £40 per player, pretty sure last year I was only paying around half that.

Let's hope that your Handicap Committee do what they're supposed to do - closely monitor newly allocated handicaps and adjust if necessary.

On another forum someone wrote this:
A friend said to me that the first thing he is going to do when he plays is put everything he has in to the first tee shot. The 2nd thing will be to hit a provisional.

That was both my mate and me yesterday, his drive off the first tee went short into the left bushes then I topped mine and it just trickled onto the ladies tee. As we had already decided we were only playing for fun/practice and not marking cards I teed up another ball and managed to hit a pretty decent drive, then a very nice 5 wood onto the front of the green, then two putted, if we ignore the duff I actually made a par.

The greenkeepers have done a great job with a reduced team during lockdown so the course was in absolutely lovely condition and it was really nice to be back playing golf again. My putting was fine but the driving took a few holes to settle down and get some distance with direction, I'm very pleased overall though, I made a couple more pars and played quite a few good individual shots, now I just need to link them up a bit more.

I bought a secondhand non working buggy last year and had the mechanics fixed then renovated the cosmetics myself but I haven’t been able use it at all because of the wet winter and Corona lockdown. First time out on it yesterday and it performed well, still walked 8290 steps though. I’m planning on playing at least three rounds a week from now on so it will help take the pressure off my aging body if I use it some of the time.

Matchplay ?

Not sure that would apply, as we're not playing head to head, it's best betterball stableford score out of several pairs

On a similar thread would Foursomes now become Twosomes?

It's a whole new world out there

Forgive me if this is daft, but I thought that was the whole point? Every time I play in a comp or put in a supplemental card, my handicap will be adjusted. My 35 handicap was based on three card fpr rounds played in shocking conditions. I always knew I'd be able to improve on that...

I took up the game for the first time in Dec 2018 with a winter membership deal. Submitted 3 cards around 110 (par 70) and was allocated 28. Took me until June 2019 to start playing to handicap and currently at 23. Thought mine was a bit harsh to start but I can see the logic, had to play for a few months to hit it, then subsequently start chipping away at it.

Fantastic out there today. Course was in suberb condition, apart from some bunkers which the staff were working on. Didn't have a bad lie on the fairway and the greens had no pitch marks ! Chilly wind that made the back nine difficult, but a couple of birdies on the front gave me 36 points. More importantly I beat Lee 5 and 3.(y) Think he might have regreted shorts and short sleeves. Definitely jumper weather.

Round in three hours, and didn't have to wait on a shot, and neither did the captain behind us. Looking forward to rematch on Saturday.

I've never been a member of a club until last Sept and have never had a handicap. Best gross score I ever shot was about 98, but that may have included some, erm, illegal adjustments.

The three cards I had to submit were between 106 and 112 on a par 72, but the course was a swamp. I lost 2 balls in one of those rounds when my drives plugged in the overgrown fairway and were simply swallowed up. Even with winter rules it was very challenging. Yesterday I was probably gaining 20-40 yards on driven tee shots because the ball was actually bouncing and rolling instead of disappearing into worm country. Before I got allocated the 35 handicap I scored myself based on 28 and never got within three of that, but again that was all through the autumn and winter.

Half past 10 this morning with Mr Mimms who forsook his usual partners to play with The Wife.
I was ashamed to see 7 week old dried grass on my new clubs that were finally getting their second outing.
Course was in beautiful condition despite only 2 days of rain in the last few weeks.

Mr Mimms played so well that I suggested he takes every other month off golf in an effort to improve.
This suggestion was not accepted.

Yes, like every other player, the comp and Supplementary scores you submit will lead to adjustment of your handicap as appropriate. The Handicap Committee has an additional responsibility to closely monitor newly allocated handicaps and make adjustments outside the scope of any resulting from those produced from comp/Supplementary scores.

I'm planning to buy new irons. Should I do that now before I start playing regularly again - and while my muscle memory is not fully re-triggered to it's problematic ways?
