interesting that the club you had in your bag the longest is probably the one club you SHOULD change regularly - (your LW)

My LW is in the bag 10 years. Vokey sm5.

I've bought various others down the years but none have been able to dislodge the vokey sm5 k grind.

Black Friday/Black November/Black Whatever, just ordered some all white Nike Air Jordan 1's for my trip to Oman for under £100.

My justification is they will go with anything and can be worn as a casual shoe too, so less packing (but I'll end up with three other pairs).

Man logic at its best!

For those who love a spreadsheet, this is what I will be playing with tomorrow

View attachment 55818

When GG26 and IanM came to my club in the summer, I played with the above except I had not acquired the 23° hybrid at that point and I think I had a Powerbilt oversize 2-iron in the bag. I have 2-SW of that Powerbilt that were given to me. So bag was £123.
Turned out to be my best casual round of the year - 68 on a CR 69.1
Soon after that I shot my best qualifying round of the year with those clubs - 72 on a CR 70.8

If I use my Daiwa TCS blades at £28 and John Letters putter Golden Goose or Banker5 (£3 each), I can get the cost of the 14 below £100 fairly easily.
Played with the Daiwas and a £3 putter in 2023 county seniors scratch championship and came equal 7th place overall and equal 2nd place in 60-64 age group.
Best ever performance in that comp.
Just imagine how good you would be if you used decent equipment.

I do not mean to be scornful to you in my response. I welcome your comment as a chance to explain myself to the forum.

I like to play competitive amateur golf in a competitive way. I get a great deal of enjoyment from that. Enjoyment is my main goal and reward from playing golf.
I use decent equipment all the time. If it was not decent, I would not play with it. I am not a stupid ignorant golfer who seeks to make things unnecessarily difficult for myself.
I do that when I play with 50-year old clubs. But that is a type of golfing fun and enjoyment all of its own.

Imagining how good I would be with very new clubs?
The same.
But I don't really need to imagine.

I play a decent game decently well just as I am.
Thank you.

What I am not doing is paying indecent prices for new stuff that is not significantly different from what I use, for a recreational golfer.

We're all different.

We can take the rubbish to the tip in a car which costs 5k or 100k. Does the same thing.

Personally, I pay a man to do the tip run 🤣

No need to explain yourself, my comment was very tongue in cheek. Maybe I should have put a /s?

Just totted up how much my bags cost to put together 😳😳

Will need to up my insurance.
I leave most of my stuff in the garage as I've got to come through it from the drive when coming in the back way to my house (detached garage on the other side of my garden). I had to change my insurance as well when I counted up just how much it would cost to replace everything as my house insurance only covered the garage contents for £4K. Think it's now covered up to £15K.

I did have someone break into the garage a few years ago and they stole all my DIY tools (now keep them all in the house) and everything from the spare fridge/freezer including milk, a loaf of bread, bacon, butter, cheese, sauce, fresh veg and all the freezer stuff like meat and pizza's. Not sure if they were looking forward to a cracking breakfast after a night of thieving as they cleaned it out completely. Thankfully the golf gear was in the boot of my car on the driveway at the time.

I have the top level Golf Plan policy, which covers £10k, with various max limits per club, rangefinder, trolly etc, but our club insist on insurance against property/people damage, so went for the best cover as there was a cost to bear in any case. I think it's about sixty quid per year.

Why are you so intent on only having a half set? Would it be the end of the world to carry a 9 iron? Just curious. 😄 I know that as soon as I take a couple of irons out of the bag when I'm carrying in winter, you can bet money on which club I subsequently need three times that day.
So, over the years since getting back into golf I have found the for me, less is more. Reasons why:
- I'm a bogey golfer anyway and don't expect to get much better, this means that distance dipersion is pretty big so my gapping doesn't improve that much when I add a lot of clubs
- I have back issues but love carrying the bag on my shoulder regardless, so I need to keep it light
- Due to years and years of playing field hockey, I find varying distances with shorter clubs comes relatively easily. I hit all my shots under 100 meters with the C wedge (yes, it's a chipper). Love practicing that as well by the way: 30m, 40m, 50m etc.
- My main downfall in golf is poor decision making, having 8 clubs reduces the chance of that happening, I rarely have to hit a club I rarely hit!
- Spending a lot of money on golf clubs is not an option for me
- Finally, I want to just be able go grab my bag off its hook, put on the shoes and get onto the course, I can even see myself hanging my bag on the coat rack in future

There is one caveat though: playing only 8 clubs means that each has to work really well, and besides driver and putter, each needs to do more than one thing. For example: 5 wood has to work from tee and fairway. Sand wedge from bunker and around the green, etc.

I'm not recommending anyone else to do it this way, but for me it really works.

Cheers. I suppose it's a plus to never be in between clubs and have less indecision - and you'll learn to play knock-down shots etc. Fair play.

Just collected my two new fitted fairway woods and 5 iron. Traded in some old clubs to offset the price too.

I do need to have a play around with the 23 fairway / 24 hybrid / 26 degree 5 iron and see which does what and then settle the bag for the season. Well, that's when the pre-ordered bag eventually arrives...

It's been a busy buying year, but this should now see me done with any further purchases - LOL!

What if you 'try' them and don't like them? You are stuck with 48 golf balls. I think we have a different definition of 'try out' 😄
