Normal day , good conditions ..

id like to think the approach would be Drive & 6 iron takes ditch & water out of play , bunkers ? meh can play out of them ..

If the round was going well, three shots to the green. If it wasn't going so well and needed to catch up it would be yeeeeehaaaaaa off the tee (then most prob a reload) and see what's left!

My drive on a good normal day with some roll is about 250, so that shouldn't go in the ditch.
Should then leave me about 205 210 which is where i hit my hybrid with a good strike.
Of course those would mean me hitting 2 good shots but i know i can so thats how id play it

Lay up to ditch, praise self for being sensible & not going for glory, knob it into ditch, hack out, 2 more to green & 3 putt.

All depends on how my round is going , what the situation is , what the comp is

If I'm feeling good and swinging well then would take a driver and go for over the ditch then rescue in

Cool hole. Assuming normalish conditions, the plan would be a fade with driver just short of the bunker then a draw with 21° or 24° hybrid to the green. Can easily see some kind of chip involved however. Would be delighted with a 4 whatever transpired.

My ave drive would be just short of ditch, best one would run in so depending on how driving at that point will depend on driver or 3w off tee, most likely being driver..... I can Aldo carry my 3w about 210 on good day but mostly about 200 which would allow me to clear the pond and with a good kick may run on if not leaves a nice chip and putt (or2!)

All depends on drive.........

How would you play this hole?

455 yard par 4. 255 yards to clear the ditch....so go long and leave a 4/5 iron in. Come up short and leave a 200 yard hybrid/wood in. Come up short and play two 100 yard wedge shots?

There is a pond short of the green, bunkers both sides and a massive heathery bank behind.

Looks like best line into the green is from an approach from the left hand side of fairway, also a little more room left side of fairway across the ditch as a position to end up from the tee, as just off fairway there it's pretty clear if you overdrew it a tad or got a bit more run out, compared to just off the right side where there seems to be some trees/bushes?

Guess we're talking about normal weather conditions. The carry isn't an issue so my aim point would be right side of fairway directly between the 2 paths to hit a draw with the driver to finish left hand side fairway then would be looking to hit a 7i maybes even 8i in from there, pond doesn't come into play given where it is in relation to the green.

Would make it a much more interesting hole maybes if the green was brought nearer the pond!

Having a think about it, the prevailing wind should be from from behind, so that makes me think the carry for the ditch is doable (assuming contact somewhere near the middle of the clubface!) and even if I decided to lay up if it's 160yards to carry the pond from the end of the first fairway then it's no great shakes to have a pop at it, with plenty of grass between the pond and the green!

Out of interest, having google-earthed the course whats the area just to the south that looks like another former or future course?

I went with driver over the ditch, then whatever to the green and one putt birdie. You see not even got to the Grove yet and the power of positive thinking is kicking in.

More than likely though pulled shot into trees left, short dink back on the short stuff, mid iron to layup, chip and 2 putt.

It also depends on conditions, hard ground a well hit 3 wood could roll into the ditch, just as much as a well hit driver could clear it.

5 wood, hybrid. either in the hole or a tap in for, at worst, Birdie.

In reality, try and carry the ditch with driver, fudge it out, mess up once more, maybe in the lake, chip on, 3 putt for a 9 at least.

It was the old layout of the course.....3-4 holes changed completely. It used to be (or still is called) a Championship course.

Lots of risk going for green in 2, not much reward. I'd back myself to make 5 with a chance of a 4 with a Driver/3-wood short of ditch plus 9 or wedge laying up short of the pond with a nice full 9 or wedge to the green.
