My Sunday best drive of 230, leaving my 25 yards short of the ditch, leaving 225 yards to the green.

Depending on conditions, I'd probably play my 19° hybrid and try and miss towards the back of the green. If I miss left (usual miss), I've taken enough club to take the water out of play.

Your Sunday best drive goes 230 but left with 225 over water youre going to hit 19 degree hybrid and hope to miss long? You hit your hybrid further than your Sunday best drive?

Driver right into rough. Glory shot and topped into ditch. Drop and attempt to lay up short of pond. Thin it miles into pond. Drop. Top next back into pond. Drop. Fat pitch to front of green. Three putt

I would go 4 iron off the tee and leave myself a decent mid iron to lay up in front of the pond then wedge over.

4 iron I would be very confident to give myself a good position for my second.

Mid iron - takes the ditch and pond out of play but gives a high percentage of getting it right then hopefully the wedge in to somewhere where I could get a two putt or scab a 1 putt for par!

Depends on the day and the round.

Nothing to lose in Stableford / knock then probably take a driver over the top and hope to clear it with a good one, or come up short with a poorly hit one.

In a medal or a match, probably a 3 iron to leave around 210 and then a high floaty hybrid thing which should have more than enough legs to carry the pond.

Wind into, a driver and then a hybrid/3wood. Would back myself to carry the pond and would prefer to try and make 4 from just off the green in a bunker/rough than from 100 yards back.

This is the key point, 200 is to the green not to carry the pond. Even if I don't reach the green I'd expect to make the pond carry and it has to be easier to get up and down the closer you are (says the man with new found short game confidence :D)

Yeah that's a good point. How far between pond and the green?

tbh ive thought about this golf hole more than any other golf hole in my life so im bound to **** it up now :D

Looking at the picture I'd say 150ish from the ditch to carry the pond. A good tee shot leaves about 160 carry, if I can't do that 9 times out of 10 I need shooting.

It's a 'birdie-able Par 5' for me every day!

I know several holes like this and either get close with 2nd shot and attempt up/down or split distance after Drive into 2 and play same shot as lay-up and shot to green. In this case, i'd probably play to 50 out rather than splitting.

To be fair now you put it that way I will agree with that. Might not hit GIR all the time but an up and down now and again from inside 50 yards shouldn't be too difficult.

That's a tough looking hole! Eesh!

I guess it would all depend how well I'm hitting the ball that day, but as it's the 17th it's a make a break hole so if I had a really good score going then I'd probably play a couple of wedges, hope for a 1 putt, 2 putts for my net par. If I'm chasing a score, then I'd go Driver and hope it doesn't roll out too much, then hit my hybrid to the green.

One thing is for sure, I'd rather play the back 9 first at your place than the front 9....could be knackered by the time you get to that hole with very little hope of hitting the green in 2.

Interesting mix of answers guys.... to those that asked how far it is between green/pond - its approx. a 160 carry of the pond from the short side of the ditch, but there is an annoying 3-4 yards of rough there make the 2nd potentially difficult.

Just to give you an idea of how I do actually play it......on a winters day its a driver and 3 wood/3 hybrid normally coming up just short.

On a warmer day I'll hit driver and will pitch in/around the ditch - if I'm short then my 2nd shot depends on the lie, but would be a 4 iron/4 hybrid in. If I've carried it then a 5/6 iron in for my 2nd.

That pond is a massive psychological block though....I haven't been in it too many times, but have been known to duff one short or a massively wild slice to the right.

What's the Stroke Index? If it's less than 6 and the conditions aren't favourable then 3 Wood and 2 wedges. Chance of a Par, fairly certain of a bogey.. If the conditions are favourable then 3 wood followed by either a 4 iron or a hybrid to the green..
Pond? what pond.. If I can't see it then it isn't there...
