As it says:

  • Should they be free?
  • Up to £5
  • £5 - £10

How much does your course charge for them?

Last one I got a couple of months back was equivalent of £5

Felt that it was a bit dear (note for VJ, its free from IGF-1) at that price, but it was bought as a gift for me.

Useful tool though & nice enough memento but without receiving it as a gift from OH I doubt I'd have bought it

£5 for the standard types seems fair enough to me. My favourite being the ones with spiral binding. Would be willing to pay as much as £10 though depending on the quality of the stroke saver and the course.

I'd love to see a stroke saver app allowing you to purchase a digital version for display on your phone. This would actually get round the rules because you aren't using it as a DMD and you are viewing information prepared prior to the round.

I'd probably go for a fiver too

Not sure about getting round the DMD thing on the phone either - I seem to recall that most phones are non-conforming as they have the functionality built in, regardless of what app you're using

Max €5 but most places seem to have them for around €3, I tend to buy one as a souvenir of playing a place.

Depends on the course. I'd say about £3 for an average course, up to £5 for a better course and I would go as far as £10 for a championship course, partly for the souvenir value. I also prefer the new spiral bound ones to the older style booklet ones.

I would expect about £5 max. Only ever bought one, that was from Worksop, although I have a skycaddie I bought a stroke saver because profits go to the juniors

They should be free

If a course really really needs to charge for them these days then put it into the fee price and you get it complimentary, which always feels better. Gleneagles give a beautiful course guide booklet and bag with tees, pitch repairer etc included in your green fee...........they could charge for it but who wants to be 'nickel and dimed'

I.e. that it was for the course you were actually intending to play rather than maybe another course you had gone to by mistake.

Out of interest how much are the stroke savers at Ballyliffin? ;)

:D

Agree with this. For a basic stoke saver they must cost next to nothing to make. Especially if a course is struggling to attract visitors they should definately take a the slight hit and give them away.

If your paying £40+ they should definately be free.

For what they charge at Gleneagles, it is the least you would expect. I must have well over a dozen from Gleneagles and almost as many from Carnoustie and Turnberry that I've been given over the years. I tend to rely on my sat nav more than a Strokesaver, but some have good pro tips which can be useful.

I reeived a really nice one when I played Kingsbarns, however it was ruined by the time I got home as it was torrential rain.

Having been mugged when buying courseplanners in the past (Belfry,Forest Of Arden),i think they should cost no more than a couple of quid.I played Brailes about 8 years ago,the chap in the pro shop asked if we'd played there before, when we answered no,he gave us a course planner for free.Considering we only paid about £15 each for the green fee,it was a nice gesture giving us a £3 course planner for nothing.

Kingsbarns do the same thing from the starters hut, free kingsbarns branded titleist golf balls, branded tees, shot saver and a nice branded leather teebag, even a branded pencil... And I got on the course for free!!

I don't think it would as the device being used would continue to have illegal apps such as temp and wind speed/direction. It is these that the rule-makers apparently object to.

The point is Clive it's all relative! cheaper greenfee courses usually have cheaper quality strokesavers that cost £2-£3 retail and probably 60p wholesale. So bung a quid on the greenfee and make your visitors feel special and still make a small profit.

Most away courses i've been to are arond the £3-£4 mark which I guess is standard.

Though for a home course they could give you a freebie at time of signing up for membership which could come in handy

for what it is 3-4 quid seems fair to me and any course that is above £40 should give you one for free. Bog standard pitch mark repairers should be free as well.
