How many putts do you take on average per round?

I'm usually arond 34-35. It's not a strong part of my game generally. Average according to HDID from the rounds I remembered to enter them, was 34.2. I would regard 32 as a very good putting round for me.

Just out of interest had a quick look at the European Tour Stats.

1st Brett Rumford 27.9
198th (last) Soren Hansen 31.7
17th to 191st averaged between 29 and 31.

Interesting that so many are covered by such a narrow range but they play so much and are all generally excellent putters so it not really a surprise.

According to scoresaver2, i am at 34.5 putts per round. This is coming down though! last 3 rounds at home have been 31,30 and 29. I would love my average next year to be around 30. (early in the season, i had a 41 and a 39!) The improvement is going to come from 2 things.

1. Improving my wedge play so i have to putt less distance
2. Improving my putting! I want to be nailing everything from 6ft! (as much as possible!)

33.6 according SS2. Not bad. Best in 2013 was 27 and the worse was 39. Not making too many 3 putts but not really enough single putts either

Why do you think that is? (not making enough singles that is) since i looked at my stats for my reply, i dug deeper. My putting is lower when i miss GIR, so that says i am chipping or pitching it closer to the pin from a missed green.

My stats are, Putts per GIR 2.1, but putts NOT GIR are 1.86. Missing greens without looking at the bigger picture would say I am a good putter! (ish!)

Number of putts as a single stat is not enough, you could be the best putter in the world, but if you cant get it close, you are going to have 36 putts at best (ish)

When you miss the green you prob chip the ball closer than you do coming in with a longer iron - hence leaving more makable putts

Of course, that was kind of the point i was making. so just looking at a single stat of how many putts, is almost irrelevant. I could have a long game from hell, but be demon with wedges and have 18 putts! does that make me a great putter?

It does if those putts are all outside 6 ft...

One of the best putting stats to look at is the length of putts you hole. Bobmac suggested this ages ago. Tot up the footage of your final putt on each green - the bigger that number, up to the point of luck taking over, the better putter you are.

I think stats can be misleading for putting. A good way I think of looking at it is :-
How many do you miss from 6 feet and in?
How many do you make from 6-10ft??

Now that makes sense. But still for me, trying to record/remember stats when playing seems counter productive. Am I the only one?

erm do it after the round.............unless you have poor memory retention, I put the number of putts per green on my card as a reminder which I can then remember the approx length.

One day I want to be a sub 30 regular putter and unlock my potential...

I could've been a contender I tell ya!

he and the others are on their own forum now where ask the experts are only answered by a recognized expert first, then the great unwashed can chip in.
They do have a section for any bargains anyone has seen about kit or courses I believe, which is a very good idea.

I never worry about how many putts I have had. As has already been said you can have 36 and have 18 pars on your card. On the other hand you could have 36 putts and have 18 bogies. I prefer to look at how many 3's I have had. By that I mean 3-putts and chip and 2-putts. The other day I had 2 3-putts and 5 chip and 2-putts on my card. That to me is important because I have basically given 7 shots away in my mind.

I haven't kept a history of my stats until the last few weeks so all I know is my last 3 rounds have been 30, 35 (the ice cold putter round that prompted this thread) and 31. I would guess 30\31 is normal.
