Hi all,

We'd like to get your feedback on the above question: if you were to estimate (if you don't keep a record), how many putts would you say you average per round?

Are you making more of an effort to improve your putting? Is this better or worse than last year? Have you finally found the right putter for you? As always, your responses are welcomed and encouraged.

Hope everyone is well.

Nick

Average for comp rounds just below 31 , there again our greens tend to be flatter than some that are around, I do tend to putt pretty well though. Best way to improve putting imo is to replace an underimproving flat stick with a new shiny one :) (I may even have found a keeper in the Ping Ketsch this time too!)

I'm not sure hie many putts a round as I don't record them. I had a good tip that has improved my putting recently. I now putt with predominantly my right hand with the left on just for the ride. I find it much more accurate to feel that I'm pushing the ball on the line rather than striking the ball

30.96 is my average in all rounds since 14th March but it isn't a stat I pay that much attention too as it on it's own can be very misleading. I actually record a "putt expectancy" which I use to tell me how well I am chipping and how well I am putting against my expectation. Generally, I have more putts because I don't chip close enough.

mine has gone up dramatically as a direct result of my improved ball striking!!! :(

then I got a new (Versa) putter that's apparently weighted better for my putting stroke.......so it's also gone up as I get used to it.

further improvements to approach shots(some closer rather than all just on) and bedding in the new putter should bring it down by 6-7 over the next 2 months

I'm not a good putter, so give myself a couple of up & downs, plus a couple of 3 putts, the rest mostly being 2 putts = 35 to 37

I would say though that number of putts per round is the most pointless stat in golf (IMHO of course), putts per green in regulation is much more indicative of your putting ability.

I'm averaging a tad over 30 this season thanks in the main to a short game. I'm getting it closer if I miss a green and giving myself more makeable putts for an up and down. I'm also working hard on practicing from 3-6 feet which is beginning to pay off

30.85, so that's 31 then.

Been working on reducing 3 putting and it's down to once in ~50 attempts. Balancing this with being generally a bit more aggressive on greens - try to hole everything basically. Doesn't mean launching the ball at the hole but could be just dropping it in. Don't believe in the old adage about getting the ball to within 18in; why not try to hole it?

That's what I do, I never hit a putt that I am not trying to hole.

i have put 32-34, however its coming down rapidly. I do practice a lot and its improving greatly, from 12 yards and in I believe i can hole everything (ok i don't, but i am capable) my issue is not getting close enough to the pin with the approach, so i am starting off with a 30ft putt! been working hard on long distance control to ensure these stay a 2 putt and not a 3. (also working on getting it closer in the first place!!)

putting is fast becoming the strongest part of my game.

I totally agree with this. Pointless stat imo.

I have gone for 35-37 but often it is higher, my short putting is by far the worse part of my game, for someone of my overall ability (13 handicap) it really is shocking, as shown yesterday when a gross 87 included 7 missed putts of less than 4 feet, several less than 3 feet. My long putting isn't too bad although I do not read greens very well, I regularly 3 putt despite getting reasonably close with my first

As for has it improved or got worse, I would say that it has always been a problem, despite having numerous putting lessons, the latest being only 2 weeks ago.

Its not totally pointless when looked at with other stats, such as GIR etc. On its own, it does not give a full account though, you could miss every green, be a demon with a wedge and have 18 putts per round!

On the flip side you could hit every GIR 2 putt every green for 36 putts but walk off with a level par round. I don't record my putts per round as I dont think it actually tells me much. My average could go down just by chipping it closer for instance.

In this years 8 competitive rounds I've averaged 34. I've made an effort to improve in that I'm practising more on holing out/stroke path. Been using the same putter for the past 12 odd years and don't see myself changing as I don't think it's the putter, I might head for a lesson in the next couple of weeks though.

Averages for this season to date:

32.0 putts per round
1.9 putts per GIR

We have pretty large greens with some fair undulations in places. Not ecstatic with my stats, but not particularly unhappy either. If anything my putting has felt fairly strong of late, my pitching and chipping has been average to poor.
