How Many Balls in your Bag

I have started to leave balls out of my bag as I was carrying to many. I am down to about 10 and don't bother picking up unless they are good quality.

Problem is - I don't know which ball is good quality or not (or so ancient not worth bothering about). Yes there are some that are obvious (TopFlite, ProStaff, Ultra) - but I have no idea about specific models of such as Taylor Made, Nike, Callaway or Srixon (See Distance balls elsewhere). Even Titleist 332s and 392s.

About 6 new ones and a similar number of liquorice all sorts, but as I'm an old git and use a motocaddy I never really notice.

When I do carry it's about half a doz. and hopefully no wets or a brolly.

Not me - I shoot off at a brisk pace to give me time for a rummage :) It's also something to do if my PPs are faffing around or we are waiting to play.

Ill do the same. I actually quite enjoy a ball hunt. My current supplier is a little pond about 30 yards infront of the first tee at a small course near me. Just this summer must have found about 50 brand new Pro v1s, Lethals, Z stars, Supersofts etc

And so as a result of another thread I have removed a half dozen Srixon Distance balls from my bag - as little reluctantly as they are all pretty shiney and clearly as new :)

4 or 5. Always get a new ball out of my locker for a comp, maybe a couple for a match. If I've lost a ball in a medal, my round is probably over anyway so never bother replacing it with a new one.

Matchplay is slightly different. If it's an important tie I'd be inclined to replace a lost ball with a new one, but I'd probably not use a new one for a provisional.

The other 3 back ups are used new balls from previous rounds if I've managed not to lose them.

Stopped picking up crappy balls, practice bag is full of them, but only use them if I'm not collecting after a practice sesh. If I do plan to pick them up, I choose from a supply of discarded pro vee's, also used for chipping practice.

only buy Pro V1x's but will use a V1 if I find one in good nick.

what's wrong with playing an old pickup - say a Titleist 392 Pro v1 ball that might be 5+yrs old. Do they deteriorate? - or do we just not like to be seen playing with a ball whose cover has yellowed a bit?

usually about 6 balls. as to pickups i use them only if it is a decent pro v1 or similar else if in mint condition hand it to wifey - she doesnt care which ball she plays. bad quality pickups land in my practice bag or wastebin

that's the thing - does it matter if it isn't in mint condition? - maybe it does. Maybe the covering of balls deteriorate in time as they yellow. But I've never noticed any effect and so I'm not bothered at all playing with an older off-white pick-up.

Always anticipate losing 3-4 per round at the moment thanks to my wayward tee behaviour. Carry about 12-16 at any one time.

Today's round : Lost 5, Found 2, net loss of 3. First time round a local course that has narrow fairways with mature trees and what appears to be wild roving meadow underneath them.

Definitely lived up to my username this time :o

Yellowed cover tells it's own story but I wouldn't go back as far as a 392; Titliest 's own data shows it to be a fair few % shorter then the later models! After that they are all much closer (as the rules waded in to try and prevent distance development in balls)

I tend to have 5-6 new ones in my bag and around 10-12 old one or pick-ups thats enough to keep me going. Yesterday managed to lose only 2 balls all round so that was a good round.

I normally carry a couple of dozen with me but after losing half of them in a league match at Moss Valley a few weeks ago that figure has been severely depleted.
