Reading Owen_Thomas topic got me thinking if your good enough not to be lossing a load of golf balls every round, is there like a rule of thumb where its one round to one golf ball kind of thing??

I am hitting it at 100+mph & 80+ times a round surely one round is enough? I do notice the bridgestone's i use at the mo tend to mark very easyly anyways and i be lucky to make it round 2/3 times anyways before lossing it..

Also now thinking on the lake balls as well, god knows what they have seen before they have been licked up and boxed up in JJB sports before you buy them lol.. You could be better off with a new box of Dunlop DDH's or something lol.

I play it until I lose it.

If I manage to hang onto one long enough for it to be very scuffed up I'll break a new one out for a competition, but then it'll be back to the scuffed one for the next practice round.

I use a new ball for one medal round which is often enough for the ball to rip up then use it for practice rounds so your still playing the same ball for practice rounds increace your feel for the ball.

I rarely lose a ball. If I'm playing a proper game, it's rare to use it the whole way round.
In bounce games, I tend to play with a good, used ball. Some of these may have been in my bag for months but still unscuffed and in decent condition. I think I have a Nike Ball (old model, feel-speed?) which has seen well over 100 holes.

I DO think balls lose their zip and must eventually get out of shape to a degree.

If its brand new for a comp then i'll probably use it for the next one or two bounce games before it goes in the praccy bag. Got stacks of 2nd hand pro v's in a bucket in the garage

My answer is that it really depends. The ball could be worse for wear after two holes and a smiley or it could be fresh as a daisy after 2 rounds.

My wedges seem to cut softer balls to shreads so generally use one for 9 holes if it lasts that long. Especially as our front 9 is quite short so wedges are used more often.

The top pros use a new ball every hole. Tiger once said he would use a new ball for every shot if he could. Personally I will use a new ball every round.

I'm just chuffed if I can get the same ball around 18 holes. If I do manage this feat (which does happen occasionally) I use my "lucky ball" in my next game, and usually smack it OOB from the first tee.

:(

Any comp will be 1 round max.

A selection of these balls deteriorating to various shades of beige are then used for any practice rounds.

The worst of these will be dumped to the practice bag at irregular intervals during the season.

Dends on two things...
1. Playing a serious round of golf and playing well, I will change a ball 2 or 3 times in a round regardless, as well as when the ball shows damage.
2. Casual play or trying out things, same ball for 18 holes or even scruffy old ball or two, or three, or four......

Well today my 1st ball lasted two shots and the 2nd ball 4 shots!!

3rd ball lasted 17 holes.

But on a good day/week I do change them every 18 holes,as they do cut up a bit when I'm hitting well and the ball being a Tx4 which is very soft.

I start a new ball for a comp round, then replace it with another new one if a) I lose it (most likely) or b) it gets scuffed. (If I'm having a mare I might replace it with anything to hand, (a rock or if I can't find one, a Donnay)
