When should you use a new ball?

It's funny but this is something I was thinking about the other day. Normally a ball will last me 36 holes if I'm lucky but my Callaway No.4 Hex Chrome just won't get lost. And it's not showing any real signs of wear. My opponent on Monday commented on this fact. But I just started wondering if the internal construction is starting to get worn.
I'll tee up a new one on the next medal but I don't swap as a matter of course if the ball still looks OK.
