How long before your first hole-in-one

im coming up to 30 years on and off playing and still the closest ive managed is 2 inches from a thinned 3 wood which hit the flag and stopped 30 yards short of where it was going!

Seve never had one:(

Actually he did.......but it took him a very long time to get it! Can't remember when but it was certainly well into the twilight of his career.

My uncle took up golf as a boy, played all his life and didn't get his first ace until after he retired. He then got his 2nd a couple of holes later in the same round

...and so dear @vkurup - I'd just forget about getting a hole in one if I were you :)

If it happens it happens - and it might never - such a capricious mistress is golf. You may love her to death and satisfaction a-plenty you might get in return, yet still she might refuse to give you that which you most desire.

Scoring an ace is purely a chance event. However, the more you play, the better your chances are at scoring an ace.
I am in my 3rd season, and have had a few close ones (some which I then par-ed or Bogied).

Question for the regular swingers. How long was it before you scored an ace? And have you had any subsequently?

I don't believe it's purely a chance event. Yes, there is a degree of luck in whether the ball actually drops into the hole or not but you still need the skill to hit it close in the first place. (Admittedly complete flukes also occur!)

I've never had one but have had a few tap in twos from a matter of inches. In our medal last week I hit a sweet tee shot straight at the pin, ball pitched front half of the green and released towards the hole. On the tee we're all shouting "get in the hole" but it shaved the cup and finished about three feet past. Rarely have I been so disappointed with a birdie!

Maybe one day!

I have pondered this myself after I got one. Was I just extremely lucky as my handicap is in the late 20s and I did not even hit a green on the other par 3s on that day. Or, for those 4 or 5 seconds in between the ball leaving my club and rolling in the hole, was I one of the best golfers in the world as I perfectly executed the ultimate shot in golf? Then again was it perfect as I imagine my swing is anything but, however the ball went in the air, bounced and rolled in at the pace of a put. Which is as textbook as you could get.

Having thought about it I know I was extremely lucky. But as you say there must have been some skill there to get it heading towards the hole. It's just that if I hit the same shot another 100 times I doubt I would get it in again.;)

Agree... same as chasing women.. ooopss.

Got my first one yesterday!

Been playing around 10 years

Congratulations..

I've hit the pin, I've had one lip out and I've had one stop within 4 inches of the hole. I think I've used my luck up on those so I never expect to get one and if I do I hope it's not in a comp!

Had my first a few months after i took up the game, but it was on a par 3 course and the hole was only 118 yards long, does that count ?
Second one came in a midweek medal, then i had another about 16 months later on the same hole. that was nine years ago and i've not had one since, although i've had a few near misse's, one of which actually resulted in the ball smashing the side of the hole in, but ended up 4 feet away.
Whilst taking part in the longest day challenge last Saturday, one of my team actually had a hole in one on the 10th hole at Copsewood Grange. A sweetly struck 6 iron from 180 yards that pitched straight in the hole.

It must be luck as my buddy reckons I'm the luckiest golfer he's ever played with whilst I know that I'm not a lucky golfer - that's why I've never had a hole in one. It's luck. You can be the most practiced and meticulous pro in the world with the most repeating swing but there are too many uncontrollable outside variables that affect the flight, landing, bounce and roll of a golf ball for it to be anything other than luck. Skill can get it in the bucket - luck get's it in the hole.
