to get a tee time at your place ?

I'm starting to get really fed up with my club. Sometimes I can take a day off a short notice if it's quiet and find it nearly impossible to get a decent tee time during the week.

Say if I find I have tomorrow off. I'll call up the club at say 3pm and the earliest tee time I can get the next day is 2 or 3 O'clock.

And when I do get a tee time the pace of play is so slow it's unbearable. Especially if I'm playing as a 1 ball.

I renewed my membership for a year last month, but starting to wish I hadn't.

I guess it's good that the club is getting business but what's the point of being a member when I can't play when I want (within reason) ? Or am I being unreasonable ?

I think its like any situation where you do something at short notice your generally too late,as for going out as a one ball everything is going to seem slow,so i would say you are being a little unreasonable.

Dont have to book tee times, just turn up and play. This seems to be one of the main advantages of a true members club.

Sat and Sun mornings are generally the only busy times.

We're only busy first thing in the morning so booking's essential. After about 10 you can pretty much turn up and play. Gets busy around the time the twilight rates kick in.

In theory you can just turn up and play unless there is a competition or match on. In reality there are a number of greedies that go out (Tuesday x 2, Thursday and Saturday x 3) and so the secret is knowing when these are on and giving them a wide berth. To be honest anytime after about 12 and there is never a problem

If it's busy and you can't get a time then join up with someone else. That way you get a game, you don't have to wait on every shot and you meet some new people too. It's supposed to be a social game after all :)

Westy,
Chesfield Downs is part of the Crown golf group which gives you free access to 29 other courses, 7 of which are within an hours drive of your club, (Abbotsley, Batchworth Park, The Hertfordshire, Mill Green, South essex, Stableford Abbots and Trent Park).
Do you ever try getting on at these courses when yours is full?

Plus I also suspect that your is busy for this very reason, ie other Crown group players booking to play your course for free. In addition, your golf membership gives you free gym access, so the membership there is very popular. Do the owners cap the number of members, or do they sell as many as they can?

I know they hammer the society days there as well as I have played loads of society games, and it has always been really busy when I have played with other societies on the course at the same time.

Nice course though...shame you can't play it when you want.
After all, thats one of the reasons most people pay for golf membership. Could be time to look at another course.

I'll usually do this if I've managed to get a time as I do prefer social golf to plodding round by myself.

I can just turn up and play apart from when there are comps on i joined my club this year as i was sick of having to book and waiting on more public courses.so guess im at a members club then. ;)

Rickg,

yeah I do try to get on other crown courses if I can't get on at Chesfield. But seem to run into the same problems if trying to book the day before. Not always, but most of the time.

I think a lot of the problem is the number of society days they book up during the week and as it's run as a commercial business it's run for profit so not really for the members.

It's a real shame as the other members there are great bunch and I have really enjoyed my time there over the last year and made lot a good friends so don't really want to leave. The weekend golf and comps are great, just weekdays are a pain.

As I say I've already signed up for another year already so will see how it goes. I know I'm not the only one at the club who feels this way so might mention it to the committee and see what they say.

Chesfield was one of those I considered moving to (as well as Abbotsley) but at neither one could I ever get an answer when I called the membership 'secretary?' - only ever got a damned answerphone.

sounds like a good miss as I expect to be able to drop in for a twilight (after 4.00 pm) round without a load of fuss. we only need book at weekends, though getting shut out by societies is not uncommon, especially on a Friday.

Westy, if you fancy a round after 4.30 some evening give me a shout, I work in Stevenage.

Hoebridge is a public course but I can normally get a tee at 17:30 in the summer if I book the morning I want to play. Can be a bit slow but if I'm on my own I usually get played through so normally get 18 in before dark.

Would love to join somewhere private but can't justify the money at the moment. Maybe next year.

It's early days at my new club but today was a bit of a pain. Just turned up and managed to get on but ran into the back of a society on the 6th so I had to walk across the course to play the last 4 holes just to play some golf without being held up.

Have to book up for weekends but that's when I play the comps so that's never an issue.
