I'm moving clubs at the end of this year, which gives me a great excuse to play lots more courses while looking for a new home. I have 3 fantastic courses on my doorstep, but can't get into 2 of them (Wallasey and Royal Liverpool) without being introduced by an existing member, and the other one (Caldy) has a 3 year waiting list.

There are some nice courses if I go a bit further afield, but I'd be looking at a 45 minute drive each way. I'm worried this might become a bit of a drag, does anyone play so far from home ?

Yeah I play at Beacon Park in Skelmersdale and live in Liverpool.

Takes about 30-40 minutes on a weekend.

Only downer is I can't have more than a pint after my round but I guess unless you live within walking distance it's the same for everyone.

My course takes about two minutes to the first tee I wouldn't really like to travel more than 15 mins, if I have a spare hour I sometimes play 4 holes or practic puttng etc I dont think I would as much if half the time was spent getting there.

I'm lucky. My last two courses have only been two-minutes drive away.

As Freddie says, it's great to be able to go up there for 2/3 holes or a half-hour of chipping.

It would have to be one hell of course for me to want to travel more than 30mins.

Ganton's 45mins from me. That would be worth the drive.

It depends whether you live in a city or not I suppose?

pretty much as above, my two main courses when i was playing alot more were both within 10 miles. this is hand for both social and playing. a cab back from both was (back then) about £6.00 so you could meet the boys, few games of snooker and a few pints and a cab home. then cab back in the morning, 18 holes get the car from the night before and back home,

since not being a full member i must have spent £100's at the driving range per year, infact well over 6 months membership for most local average courses.

I tried a 1/2hour commute to a golf club, basically chews to much of your day up unless you are a) Single b)A very understanding wife or c) wishing to get a divorce!

I was leaving at 7.30am and not getting back till at least 1pm at the earliest.

Added to that mid week golf was important to me in selection of a club to make it good value for money. So always bear it in mind if i can play it after work.

Saying that if the course was extra special i would make allowances to be a memeber of it.

I am not sure if you posted a similar thread on another forum but i would not rule out Wallasey, maybe your current club give you a letter of recomendation or just having a chat with the manager may be enough.

Where I am (2 minutes from the M5), I have plenty of course within 10 minutes drive. They're mostly rubbish.

All the better courses are within 20-25 minutes though. And I've decided upon a course that's right on the verge of that 25 minute bracket (20 with good traffic)...But that would be the maximum for me.

The reason it gets the vote however is because it has two courses (par 3 18 and full 18), great practice facilities and is dirt cheap for the next 3 years (£335 a year until I'm 30 for full membership and unlimited free golf).

I do like to play a few holes at short notice, or go for a bit of practice so I think it could be an expensive mistake joining too far away.

That was me on the other forum Aces, spoke to the manager but he still wants 1 member recommendation, waived one for a letter from current club.

I had the same predicament at the start of this year. Chose a club 15 minutes away and have been quite happy. Only problem for me is that when I'm off shift and just fancy a game I can't just turn up and play, it's generally busy during the day. So it's either play before 8am or wait till after 4.30 when the wife gets back :D

Must admit because of this situation and as much as I like the course, I will probably have serious considerations for next season to go elsewhere.

You should also consider where the club is in relation to your place of work. I have about 25 mins from home but its only 5 minutes from work. So if I fancy morning, lunchtime or evening after work its very convenient.

I'm at the edge of acceptable (for me) range now @ 20mins each way.

Going to move another 20mins further away soon so will be looking to join a club closer to home at the point.

I used to have a 45/50 minute drive to the club I was member of. It's not even that far away, it's just awkward to get to from where I am and it does add a big chunk to the weekend, which is part of the reason I left. I might join Ilfracombe for that reason, it's the nearest and it's interesting enough, but I'm enjoying playing Portmore of a weekend with my friend who's a member there, that's only another 5 minutes or so away.

Weekday golf isn't even an option though, I have a two hour drive to work...

Mine is halfway between work and home, so can be at the course for 5.30 most nights and at weekends its only a 20/25 minute drive (on the way to the In-laws so the wife is happy!! ;))

I live nearly an hour away from where im a member, but it's close to work so for me it's practical. I play about 2-3 times during the week and only play once at the weekend (comps).

I used to live an hour and a quarter from my home club for 3 years and played once every 2 or 3 weeks. I was on the waiting list at a club near to where i lived at the time and recieved the letter telling me i could join just after changing job and moving away.
I now live within 15 minutes of my home club and like being able to play and practice when i get spare time.

ive been a member of a few clubs... on a sat/sun morning 30 mins isnt too bad ..but when u want a quick one after work you wanna be there in 15 mins really!
