I have recently been voted onto our clubs sub-commitee,and due to the clubs finances im looking to organise a golf competition. It will be called the "Vivary park early bird open" as im looking to have it in April. My format will be stableford,2 categorys-1-12 and 12-24.Firstly on an individual basis, then a 3 scorecard basis,4 in a team best 3 to count. Also twos, spot prizes.First two in each category in the individual, then first 3 teams. £100 Per team, hoping to get 40 teams, how does this sound?and any tips, this will be my first organised comp, thx

Sounds great mate, good luck, i'm sure it will go well.

I've found that sometimes a shotgun start is good for open comps. If you do one in the morning and include lunch afterwards you get a buzz around the bar (and people spending money) , and similarly if you do one in the afternoon followed by an evening meal, the same applies.

Just sometimes the morning players if they have travelled a fair way, wont come back in the evening if there is a presentation.

Not much to add, all looks good, You could have a charity/club bucket on the hardest par 3. Miss the green and penalty of a £1. All day putting comp to raise a bit more money.

Is the comp for ladies only, and how do you know they are early ? :D :D :D :D :D

I love the shouts for a shotgun start. Haven't checked the website but is Vivary Park the first 40 hole golf club in the country?? :D

One thing i will say mate, being in the South West Region......the PGA hold a BIG season opening pro am down in Cornwall for all the west region pros in April. I think it's 12th - 14th next year, it might be wise to avoid that date as that will have 120 odd teams in that.

Looks good to me mate. Gotta agree on the shotgun start. Hope you get this one off the ground and have a successful day.

Sorry to put a bit of a dampner on this PJ but 18 holes and 40 teams shotgun start just doesn't work. :(

Realistically, the max number of teams would be one of each on the par 4's, and two on the par 3's. So that would be about 27 teams max at your gaff. Bearing in mind the length of most of the par 4's, I would imagine that everyone will be waiting on virtually every shot so the round could well take 4 - 5 hours or more.

If you have any par 5's then you could double stack them i.e. have two teams with the first teeing off about 10 minutes before the rest of the field.

Sorry mate but I no longer play in over-stacked shotguns - life's too short and no matter how good the company or how deserving the charity the golf is not enjoyable :(

Keep it manageable and people will come.

As an alternative, is a two tee start possible? Don't know how long a 4 ball should take at your place but say it takes 1h 40m, plus an enforced stop at the end of 9 for coffee and bacon roll, that could mean about about 26 groups but the early starters would be in at least 2 hours before the last groups.

Good luck though on whatever you decide.

Hi,

Depends how you want the post golf to go I suppose.

As said, if having max number of teams out in either one or two tee start there is going to be a long wait for the early teams before any prize giving.

If your hoping for people to hang around afterwards, mingle and stay for the prizegiving then a shotgun start is probably best although, again, as said, you are limited to the number of teams you will be able to get out and round in a decent time.

You could do your competition as indicated in the OP and get as many teams out as you can and have a seperate event at the night? Maybe a quiz night or something to follow on from the prizegiving? Yes, will turn it into an all day event but then those that play early can go do whatever they have to do and return to the club later on and hopefully this would also generate more £ for the bar.

Good luck with it.

After listening to you guys,i think i need to reduce the number of teams and do a two tee start,or one tee start but let the local teams go off first,so theres a chance they hang around, and locals are likely to drink more as they might not have to drive.THX for your ideas,if you come up with anything else please let me know.

The thought occurred that you could change the format to say Better Ball or Greensomes (other suggestions for formats welcome) and 2 teams off each tee with a shotgun start. These formats are fairly quick and enjoyable.
Make individuals welcome to make up teams on the day so they do not have to worry about finding 3 others to join in.
Also, have a 'check in desk' in the spikes bar with a collection bucket so people can drop some dosh into it at the same time as paying the competition entry fee.
Maybe ask other members to donate some unwanted xmas golf gifts (like a PGA ball retriever we all get every year!) as spot prizes.
Good luck i hope it goes well whatever you decide to do.
