Hi all,

I am going to start analyzing my round stats in a push to get the handicap down again this year.

2 Options I see are
1. Record during play
2. Record the stats after the round

1. Record during play - Could this impact my concentration/score? ie green to next tee messing about with recording stats could mean I have to step up and hit the next tee without having given it enough thought.

Be interested to hear how others do this

On out Friday Fragger-bait, He usually keeps score. I carry an ordinary card, mark my score, Fairways hit, GIR and number of putts.
On Competition days I just carry an extra card, mark the other players score then do my normal with the extra card.
takes about 15 seconds while you're waiting on the tee or walking to or from the tee.
I don't find it upsets concentrationa t all, it's not really much more than marking a card normally.

Can reccommend Score Saver 2 as a stats program.

I use scoresaver 2 http://www.scoresaver.co.uk/

Takes 10 seconds to record the data on the scorecard sized sheet (FIR, GIR, Putts, Sand Save y/n Penalty shots) and then it takes a few minutes once you get home to load it. It will also work out handicaps although if the CSS changes you need to take that into account. You can also record your practice sessions and build up a pattern of how long you spend on each aspect and make notes on each session. You can do a similar thing with lessons. Its a great package and the stats are more than ample. It also gives you the option of priniting off reports for your teaching pro so he can see where you have been doing well/poorly over a designated period and can tailor lessons accordingly

I never worry about my stats while I'm playing other than to mark them and so I'm never thinking about them on the next hole. I'll look at them in detail once I've finished

I use the golfshot app on my phone tapp in score, putts, club hit from tee, direction, sand shots penalties etc. fill inbetween holes or walking down fairway after next tee. As imurg said takes about 15 secs so nothing to interfer with your round. When you've finished it works all your stats out. Simples.

its easy enough to go through a round in your head once you've finished. thinking about stats etc would melt me. id say just concentrate on the shot at hand.

You do.
Entering your stats is one way of switching off from the concentration required to hit a golf shot.
Switch off between shots, switch back on when you get to your ball.

i believe the time would be better spent thinking about your next shot. even walking to the ball, your thinking wind direction, wind speed, flag placement, can i make the green, what are my options for bail out etc. the more time spent doing these things on the way to the ball means youll have more information processed to allow you to make a better call. rather than walking to the ball then starting this process under a lot less thinking time.

I use golfshot on my iPhone and just transfer all the data and scores after I've finished. I prefer to concentrate on the round at hand and analyse later.

I've got a Shotmiser G500. When you get to your ball you tap the distance reading at the top of the screen and it logs the position of your shot. At the end of the hole you can simply add on the number of putts. It takes no time at all and at the end of the round you can review hole by hole how you've played it as it joins up the dots. It also logs where each shot landed so gives you sand save, FIR, putts, penalties etc

Great gadget :)

All the top Pros switch off between shots.
All of them.
You can't concentrate on one thing for more than about half an hour before your mind wanders.
Keep that half an hour for when you're actually playing.
Use the time between shots to refresh your mind.

I use SS2 as well, takes 10 seconds whilst walking to the next tee to record your score, and other stats
It brings closure to the hole and allows you to put that hole away and think clearly about the next one.

I used to just fill in my card, but then I would have spent a extra few moments checking my score, putting pressure on myself if it wasnt going well

Now those few seconds are spent filling in the stats, so I dont worry about the scores until the end

Just how my brain works, its a beautiful brain, my Neurologist says so :-)

I keep a spreadsheet which is very anorak-ish but I love it stats-wise! It's been very useful to my coach comparing 2010 to 2011 in terms of GIR etc. I just tick if I hit the fairway, number of putts/score and enter that when I get home. I don't think about it on the way round though and don't add up front 9 scores anymore. In a medal round I'll know there or thereabouts where I am relative to handicap but try to keep those thoughts away as it just adds pressure and I should be taking each shot on its merit and not thinking about the previous hole or what I need to score on the homeward stretch etc.

I will analyse after a round where I was in terms of GIR, fairways hit and number of putts. I'll also check over time which holes/greens seem to cause me a problem and focus on those holes in my next practice round and try and manage them more successfully.

I add up all the shots and that's the stat I use :)

Very rarely examine stats more than that as I doesn't give me anything to work on apart from a few numbers.

i'm inclined to go with imurg on this one.i sometimes play my best golf when i'm thinking about other stuff that has nothing to do with the task in hand.

then when i arrive at my ball i then start thinking about the task in hand and i've played my best doing this.........this might not work for everyone but it is easy enough when you get home to remember what fairways you hit and how many putts you had.this is what i use to do but i can't remember the name of the website i used.i think it was mygolfonline or something like that.

Must admit, this is something I have often thought of doing. But just can't be bothered. Easy enough to know what needs working on, without it. To me the game has to be fun and I think I am obsessive enough, without adding more.

You can do it on HDID if your registerd on it , go in that night after the rounfd pull up your result & it lets you build up your stats , not great if you have played too many shots to remember tho ,

Thanks everyone.

Some good tips to try on my next outing. Like the sound of carrying an additional card for the stats only as you have to hand in your card in a comp.

I am guessing recording while you play is easier if your carrying also as you have both hands free to make notes on your card/SS2 card. I use a pull trolley so would have to wait til I stop at the next tee to scribble them down.

No doubt the less shots you have to count the easier it is record :)

Bladeplayer - our scores sometimes get updated 3 days after the round. By that time I can recall 90% of the shots but there are always a few that I am not sure of- especially as you say on the holes where I recorded a 9.

I have used HDID though to embellish my comp rounds its quite good to compare stats to other golfers in you category.
