I was looking at Dustin Johnson and I wonder what I do wrong... The R11 of my usual playing partner must feel like the DB9 of my boss which has never gone over 60 mph...

Can you do it if you're only 6'?

Probably. If you had a correct technique. DJ hardly kills the ball. Strength obviously helps, but it's all about timing. Look at George Coetzee (sic)...He's known as a "big hitter", not overly tall and doesn't look like he puts any effort into his swing at all.

Obviously only a very few can do this. Most of it is technique, allied with flexibility, and shear god given talent. Optimised kit helps too.

One thing the big hitters all have in common is a lot of lag. Trying to build more lag into a swing is (in my opinion) very difficult.

Honestly, when I saw Fowler moving away from a 440yds Par 4 green because Johnson was about to drive I didn't understand what was going on. And Dustin went pass the green with that shot. Absolutely crazy.

apart from the world golf champ etc is there anyone on a still day gets 350yd CARRY?, seems incredible but I'd love to see it

On a good day I can hit the net at the range in New Malden about 2 metres above the ground. Being the net at 250 yds I guess my carry would be 280 top.

I sat in the stand behind the 1st tee last Monday and saw Dustin drive along with loads of others, and Dustin's swing just flowed, he is also tall and slim and his club head speed look really fast but in control. He was longer than most of the guys out there by some way

so your carrying 280 yards with crap range balls. Id like to see that distance measured accurately with a range finder, That isnt as an insult, but ranges often tweek the distances for us to feel good that we are ripping mega distances.

According to my range with crappy old balls i can hit my 58* wedge 80 yards, yet on a course, off turf, with either Srixon AD333 or Wilson DX3's im lucky if i hit my 58* 60 yards. now either the crappy balls are a new prototype ball for maximum distance that has not yet hit the market, or that distance marker at 75 yards is more like 55 yards.... i know which im going with.

My answer would be to be physically fit, reasonably strong and with perfect timing.

Having long levers in a big frame helps too...

Sweetspot, shaft, technique and timing.

I'd have thought.

I did notice that despite the distances, the pro's never really looked like they were caning it off the tee. Also, the clubhead speed really only appears to come from the last few inches just before the clubface hits the ball. Everything just seems to come that milli-second before impact. The body, arms, hands and clubhead. So tempo and timing then.

At least, that is how it looked.

Height has to help. I'm 6'4" and think I gain a fair few yards because of my height. I think they key might be smash factor. I know Quiros has a SF of 1.5 and imagine DJs is similar. It's still wrong though.
