How do you hit a 350+ yds carry?

On a good day I can hit the net at the range in New Malden about 2 metres above the ground. Being the net at 250 yds I guess my carry would be 280 top.

so your carrying 280 yards with crap range balls. Id like to see that distance measured accurately with a range finder, That isnt as an insult, but ranges often tweek the distances for us to feel good that we are ripping mega distances.

According to my range with crappy old balls i can hit my 58* wedge 80 yards, yet on a course, off turf, with either Srixon AD333 or Wilson DX3's im lucky if i hit my 58* 60 yards. now either the crappy balls are a new prototype ball for maximum distance that has not yet hit the market, or that distance marker at 75 yards is more like 55 yards.... i know which im going with.

I checked with google earth and the fence is in fact at 230 yds. And I thought I was going to be the new Tim... :( :(

even at 230 id say that was optimistic, most ranges seem to have nets at about 200, this seems to be because people can only just hit them with range balls. Our range has just had a huge revamp so would have taken into account distances with new spec drivers, and the net is measured at 200yrds with a bushnell, i wouldnt say i'm short but by no means a long hitter, and an absolute peach only just reaches the bottom of the net. This is slightly uphill by around 20ft, yet on the trackman at direct golf with old crappy balls i was apparently hitting a 275 yard carry.

So between real life balls and an indoor simulator ive lost 75 yards of carry...

For what its worth im 31, 6.2" and around 16st, with a swing speed of about 110/115 with a driver so do give the ball a fair old clout

To maximise your distance you need...

a good angle of attack
hit the sweetspot
point the clubface straight
have a straight swing path
and finally
good speed

To increase your distance, you have to increase your speed WITHOUT compromising the other 4 categories :D

The flags at the New Malden range are spot on when measured on google earth. The only difference is the fence where the sign says 250 and google just over 230.

I've never used the simulator in my life so I can't comment on that.

I'm just 6' but apparently my arms are slightly longer than the average and according to my pro that should be an advantage if I can put a decent swing together.

see what they have done Iku, bring the net 20 yards forward and you have gained 20 yards on that new driver you have just tried out.

On the course you know your current distances, but nothing boots the ego like pitching one into the fence. even if it isnt longer, you always feel good and i bet 90% of the time will bring that new demo home with you.

I may yet look at a new driver (tonight?). I would only buy one if I could hit it on the range I normally use. I know where I expect my ball to land, and where it runs out to with my current driver. If the new one is no longer, or straighter, then I won't buy it.

The range is up hill, and has upstairs bays, so I can see the landing, and the end of the run out. Not realistic in terms of on course, but useful for comparative research.

Won't bother with c/f anymore. Can't see the benefit.

I would imagine most ranges are the same as the one local to me. I asked the fella how they'd tweaked the balls and yardages adn his answer was...80% for the balls and equally 80% for the distance flags. This he said should equalise everything so you can trust how far things go with relation to the real world.

I bought a speed stick with the intention of purposely swinging over and over again, trying to swing faster and harder. Thank goodness I only paid £10 for it.
Sure, my swing speed increased a bit over time, but the stick is so massively long, you get flatter and flatter until in reality, your swing is messed up.
Not recommended.
I use it for other drills now. :D

350+ yards carry? its blooming easy......just carry a spare ball in your pocket and hope you dont lose the original im sure anyone could carry it 350+ then.

Can you do it if you're only 6'?

Probably. If you had a correct technique. DJ hardly kills the ball. Strength obviously helps, but it's all about timing. Look at George Coetzee (sic)...He's known as a "big hitter", not overly tall and doesn't look like he puts any effort into his swing at all.

The obvious one....

5'11", just under 12st

Sorry, this has been posted before, but no doubt a few won't have seen it and it's worth watching as another example of what we'll never be.
