How do you Decide and When to Custom Fit and Buy new Clubs ?

As a high handicapper and seeing improvements how do you decide which clubs to get custom fitted for.
I am currently playing a reg Driver (Diablo) reg MX700 3W, 17 and 23 Hybrid.
They are my most consistent clubs in the bag, but I still think a custom fit here is more benefit to me.
I appreciate it will be a large outlay of Cash, but how do you decide what to go for.
I know the Titliest fitting centre in the GUI National Academy in Carton House is top class, and only heard gooor reports. I also like the look of the 910's.
Should I take the plunge in November, get fitted and buy myself the new badboys for Christmas, break them in over the Winter and get ready for a spring attack.
All help and personal experience appreciated.

Have you definitely got your heart set ont he Titleist then. My advice would be to hunt around and try a number of makes and models first (not necessarily all 2011 models - you'll get a good deal on say the last incarnation of Ping and Mizuno) and then see what feels the best for you. Once you've got to that stage then I'd decide whether I'd want to C/F if my swing is still improving (changing under professional guidance??) or wait until I was happy with how it the swing was

As a high handicapper, I would play with what you have, which are decent clubs, and get my h/cap down.

Titleist tend to suit better golfers (can be exceptions, but true for most).

There is not a lot wrong with what you have, and for me, c/f is really only looking for the last tenth.

If you are thinking of getting fitted try and find a place that sells clubs from all the major manufacturers. I had Mizuno's in mind when I went for a fitting session. After trying the various clubs, then read thro' the stats if I'd gone for the Muzzie's I'd have ended up with clubs that weren't best suited for my swing/game.

I agree with Murph here...

The clubs you have - if there was ever such a thing as "clubs for certain handicaps" - would be perfectly capable of getting you down into single figures or better.

I'd get this "low handicappers must play with blades/players clubs" thing out of your head. PLay with what you play well with.

But.....

I agree with the others, except that I think it would be worth getting another opinion on whether or not the shafts you have are suitable for you.

I am 100% happy with my Irons. It is really the shafts if they are right for me on my driver, woods and reciverys. If the €50 spent on fitting comes back with results of (what you have is fine) then I am happy out.
I have heard so many reports on peoples fitting reports and the only 100% vote goes to the Titleist guys in Carton house and I like the look of the 910 series.
Why am I considering this, it is really a simple thing, I dont hit my driver much further than my 3 wood. I have great confidence in hitting my 3 wood and my 2 recoverys and would like to have the best suited shaft for my swing.
Thanks for the experienced feedback and I certainly know the weapons I have are not shoddy by any means.

Spent 275 odd on a c/f driver from titleist. Last 3 months. Then I outed it for 65 quid.

Awesome for a day, flipping useless for 3 months.

Be warned, c/f can only fit you for the swing you bring. If you don't have a stable swing, you are wasting your time. And money.

not very long, about 140/150 yards. I did smash one 190 down wind today though. That was a real exception.
I am not a very confident iron player.
I hit my 15deg 3 wood 210 ish
17 deg recovery 195 ish
23 deg recover 180 ish all +/- 10 yards.

It's hard to generalise from distances or swing speeds because there are other factors as well, but I'd say with those distances you're fine with regular shafts as long as your swing isn't like a blur.

Maybe when you've been playing a while and your swing is settling down to something more repeatable then it would be worth getting custom fit, but I think you're ok as you are for now.

Nothing to stop you going for it if you want to though. It won't harm your game, but you might outgrow them a bit quickly.
