I dont mean famous courses but other local ones.
I played another round at a different club today, Didsbury in fact, it was OK but very flat and I didnt like the fact that a lot of the greens lacked definiiton, often just a closey mown area at the end of the fairway.
I have played a good number of local courses and honestly, non of them compare to my own. How do others think?

Would they compare in green fees or membership fees?

I'm very fortunate, I've just applied for membership at a 2nd club so the 2 courses I'll be a member at are ranked 45th and 61st in England. One is heathland and the other is links.

I'm going to be paying closer attention to my local tracks as I'm 90% certain I moving this year, simply due to poor drainage and lack of play compared to others nearby.

I do like the design but it's hard work on a hot day like today when climbing heart attack hill, and I'm still a young 'un.

Something with fewer hills (but not flat) and a few more mid distance obstacles for good measure would do me dandy.

Course around mine are of the quality of Liphook, Hankley Common, and Hindhead. Top courses but all expensive to join, and still a bit stuffy for me.

There are no stand out courses near me. They are all quite similar with very similar prices etc.
Although I'm yet to play it you're probably a member at one of the best courses in our area.

A little further afield there is Bentley's which for me is an awesome track.

My home track has a reputation for being a bit boring which I think is justified but in regards to membership fee's we offer the best value for money in North Essex.

Didsbury in fact, it was OK but very flat

That's because its a floodplain area for the Mersey along with the adjacent courses Northenden, Withington and Chorlton. Flat as a pancake, all of 'em.

My place is a very ordinary course but has the best club / members. Always able to play the nicer local courses in their open comps with the lads and enjoy the usual good banter.

I am very happy with my course.
I was new to golf when I joined & I picked this course because it is close to home & I don't have to book a tee time (which suits me as a shift worker)
I think I struck lucky, because it is a lovely course & has all the practice facilities I need.

I realise that but the could add features to make it more challenging rather than just vary the length of the holes. There were a few with a bit of character but not many.

i am lucky because i play at one of the best courses local to me BUT i bet members from other clubs think the same about theirs,we all have a moan that xyz course has better this or that and why cant we have paths like such a course or a bigger car park etc and we all look at our own course with a more discerning eye as opposed to a fleeting visit to another local club, but if you look at the feed back sheets from the societies that use your course in can sometimes shed a different light on the subject,i am pleased to say my club always scores highly on best course played in the area by the societies, someones grass always looks greener but not through rose tinted glasses.

Thanks Swanny. Forrester Park does offer some fantastic membership deals to us younger generation.Ive never heard it called boring before though. Been told its a tight course that can be very challenging. Im playing Abridge and Cannons Brook when I get back from Spain, both are meant to be quality courses in Essex. Havnt played Bentley yet.

Tend to play a lot of local clubs in matches. A lot are a few hundred pounds difference +/- compared to Ascot but most operate a booking system. I love the fact that Ascot allows you to roll up and go off. Most courses are just the same as ours. Reasonable condition and do what they can to cater for their members. Only a couple I'd consider joining though

One of the main reasons they are like that. Is because they are used as a flood plain for the Mersey. If the river looks like it is going to flood its banks. They open the sluice gates and flood the golf courses. Any raised feature tends to get washed away by the force of water. The use of the courses as a flood defence, was a condition of building them there. I can remember as a kid skating on them when they were flooded in the winter before a hard freeze.

Having only been playing golf seriously for about 6 months when I started university, I was very excited about playing on my first private course after learning the game on Heaton Park municipal. Didsbury is the course that Manchester University use as their home course and I had a free round there when I joined the University of Manchester golf society.

Suffice to say, I was very underwhelmed. It is flat as a pancake and as featureless too. Every hole was a slight variation on a straight line and even the holes where the mersey was in play were boring as hell. The USPGA spec greens were about the only positive.

I have played or been a member at a few local courses.

Stoke Rochford is actually a little like an inland links, uneven lies, hard fairways and greens. Good course, enjoyable to play but run for a clique of members so stopped being for me.

Belton Woods is a no, do not like the courses that much or the idea of being a member at Devere hotel course. The courses are not that fun to play and the fairways really suffer in dry conditions.

Greetham Valley has 2 decent courses and I would have joined there when I lived in the village if it was not so full of societies and hotel guests that the members had issues getting tee times.

Belton Park gives me everything I am looking for, good course, good atmosphere, friendly members, the whole package and I am very happy. The only thing I would consider if cash permitted would be a second membership at Sudbrook Moor, a great 9 hole course that is fun to practice on.
