Some misunderstanding here of the risk associated with using a 7i for a bump and run...compared with the risk associated with sticking a 56* SW up in the air.
Why do I use a bump and run (it could be a 7i or a PW for me). Well I started playing on a Glasgow muni. The greens were small and rock hard. From 50yds there was little point in throwing the ball in the air - it was difficult to hold the green. So you learnt to bump and run it on. In addition longer approach shots would also often disappear just off the green - and the way back - a little bump and run. So I learned to play the shot from 50yds in - all distances - and just didn't bother learning the lob shot from 50yds. No need to. Then lots of links golf etc. B&R.
Yes there is the unknown about what will happen when your chip hits the ground - but that is where I vary between 7i and PW. If I am not happy with the look of where I'm going to land the ball I'll use a 7i. Lower trajectory so shallower angle and less spin when it first hits the ground. Less spin - less likely to spin off uncertain ground. So 7i reduces uncertainty around the fits pitch point. True - lower gtrajectory means harder to judge distance - but that's part of the judgement I make. If landing area looks pretty good - PW. More spin, more control, easier to judge distance. Why introduce the chance of serious 'fluffs' catching it really heavy or thinning it. Take as much uncertainty out of the swing - trust in touch, feel and 'vision'.
Well that's how I approach it and why I believe @region3 still has something to learn about the game
