How confident are you from 50 yds?

Some misunderstanding here of the risk associated with using a 7i for a bump and run...compared with the risk associated with sticking a 56* SW up in the air.

Why do I use a bump and run (it could be a 7i or a PW for me). Well I started playing on a Glasgow muni. The greens were small and rock hard. From 50yds there was little point in throwing the ball in the air - it was difficult to hold the green. So you learnt to bump and run it on. In addition longer approach shots would also often disappear just off the green - and the way back - a little bump and run. So I learned to play the shot from 50yds in - all distances - and just didn't bother learning the lob shot from 50yds. No need to. Then lots of links golf etc. B&R.

Yes there is the unknown about what will happen when your chip hits the ground - but that is where I vary between 7i and PW. If I am not happy with the look of where I'm going to land the ball I'll use a 7i. Lower trajectory so shallower angle and less spin when it first hits the ground. Less spin - less likely to spin off uncertain ground. So 7i reduces uncertainty around the fits pitch point. True - lower gtrajectory means harder to judge distance - but that's part of the judgement I make. If landing area looks pretty good - PW. More spin, more control, easier to judge distance. Why introduce the chance of serious 'fluffs' catching it really heavy or thinning it. Take as much uncertainty out of the swing - trust in touch, feel and 'vision'.

Well that's how I approach it and why I believe @region3 still has something to learn about the game ;)

Just back from course
Wow - impressed myself
Using soft swing 50deg wedge

3spot on, 2 of which hit the flag
3 at 3-4ft, 2 of which were mi*****/- bit thin
4 were pulled a bit and went 10 to 15 ft long and left

I'm nearly as good as the average forummer ;)

50 yards is a bit extreme for a bump and run with a 7iron! I think bob in his original post has set up a very straightforward, easy 50 yard shot, nice and flat no wind, no obstacles etc. from the original post I'd be disappointed in I didn't get at least 4/5 inside 6 feet, and in the same case scenario I'd be shocked if a tour pro couldn't double that at least!!
While 6 foot is close, roughly the length of the flagstick, this is the existence most folk seem to be picturing, don't forget you also have this distance on the other side of the hole aswell which is an area roughly the size of 5 a side goals.

Christ that's good ............................................ what name do you use on tour?.

Slime.

Pelz has one as part of his short game tests one is for a 50 yard wedge.

The scoring goes (and is based upon the likelehoddof holing the next putt)
hole it 4 points
under 3ft 2 points
3-6 foot 1 point
over 6 ft 0 points

9-12 points tour (tour average = 10 points)
8-9 3-0 handicap
6-8 3-8 handicap
4-6 15-8 handicap
2-4 25-15 handicap
0-2 25+ handicap

note these are how he rates your short game not your overall handicap.

3 inside 3 foot and 2 between 3 and 6 would give 8 points and a 3-0 handicap rating on his scoring system.

Or he could have put 10 inside 3-6ft???? How am I anywhere near tour standard?????? Four inside 6 feet would give me 4 points- middle of the table???? Slime if you don't even think you could get 4 in a 12 ft radius having 10 shots at the same shot from a nice lie on a flat bit of ground with a generous bit of green from 50 yards, you might want to try fishing or something.

If Luke Donald couldn't put 8 balls out of 10 inside a 12ft circle from 50 yards with no major hazards, no wind and a nice lie, he'd be looking for a new job pretty quickly

This shot is always a floating pitch with my 'U' wedge. Just make sure you take it back and through on plane. I can normally get it close enough to have a good chance of a single putt.

Strangely - yesterday in medal - on 2nd hole (tough SI2 par 4 ) my 2nd finished 50yd short and left 15 yds in the rough. A bit downhill and green sloping away and right to left. Did my PW bump and run pitch/chip to about 4ft and holed the put for a par - a rare beast and a par par start. I guess that all this says is that from 50yds I can get it to within 4ft on a one-off basis using my simple (Padraig Harrington-type) technique. Rest of round was careless and slovenly and ended up 5 over handicap - so much for the good start.
