How confident are you from 50 yds?

I'd probably play this as a soft half swing gap wedge and try to land the ball so it runs out to the hole.

I find a 50 yrd bump and run with 7 iron tricky to judge in normal conditions. If it was a links or the course was very firm that might well be the best option though.

How many within 6 feet? Hard to say. Maybe a couple. Couple more within 12 feet possibly. Most of the rest 12 to 25 feet with probably at least one duffed short and one thinned long.

Agree though that this would vary hugely on how well I'm playing. Some days my chipping and pitching are good, others it is pitiful. Confidence the same. Some days I'd feel good about playing this shot, others I'd be nervy and twitchy.

Unfortunately our short game practice area isn't big enough for 50 yard shots. Might be able to do a practical test at around 35-40.

I guess we have just worked out what we should all be working on then.
seems like shots from 50-80 yards is an area where we could all do with improving.

As far as I am aware we have many options to play this shot and it is about finding what is most consistent for you;

Option 1 - use a wedge and play the ball with your putting stroke using your arms and shoulders (no cocking of the wrists). This will product consistent distance if you keep your swing length consistent - so as soon as you find your 50 yards range, you should get all 10 balls on the green. Great option for consistency and those that don't have confidence in hitting a delicate short shot.

Option 2 - hit a half wedge - this is controlled with the speed of your swing, which you can keep consistent if you control it with your big muscles (chest and shoulders). This shot can be more difficult to control than option one but you may find this the better option. Great option when the flag is tucked close front of the green.

Option 3 - bump and run with an iron - again, this shot needs to be played like hitting a putter. The loft of the club will get the ball in the air and you control distance by clubbing up (not by trying to hit it harder). This option may be best when you have some room on the green to roll it to the flag

Option 4 - if all else fails and you chunk everything from 50 feet you could putt it - but for this you would need to have a flat fairway with nothing in the way etc...

Option 5 - Does anyone have another method they use that produces consistent results?

Hope this helps. I welcome thoughts / questions / criticism

Why would someone choose a 7 iron bump and run in the original scenario ?

Dunno, I wouldn't, I hate that shot with a passion, there's too much uncertainty when it start bouncing for my liking. I like to pitch it on the green whenever possible. Maybe it's because people can't hit a pitch with a wedge?

knock it close frm 50yards. this was emblazed across the front of gm last month.

i opened it up hoping for some magic trick. turns out it was just hit a pitch and practice.

same old story in this game :)

50 yards out is going to be a soft shot with 8I/9I for me with lady luck determining if any get & then stay inside 6ft & then if it stays on the green :D

(obviously I'd hole the resulting chip-shot back 8/10 times but that's for another thread ;) )

The old timers play this shot all the time with a 7 iron. They get them really close quite often.

They play a scootery running game which is alot different to your average golfer. It takes quite a bit of skill. We will all be playing it before long. ;)

The day I trust the random bounces of a fairway over my ability to land a ball on the green from 50yds will be very close to the day I find another hobby.

I am already paving the way for bowls when I hang up the clubs. its got quite a lot in common. trying to land a ball at a certain spot using touch and finesse.

However, as I indicated in my response I think there are situations where the run might be more predictable than the bounce although maybe not in the precise scenario in Bobs OP.

Just to tweak the question would you play the same shot on a links where the ground was baked and the green was very undulating?

I wasn't saying the chip and run is the wrong shot, just that I don't like playing it as the bounce is unpredictable.

To your tweak, if I can stop the ball not far past the flag by landing on the green that is what I'll try. Obviously if I've no hope of the ball stopping by playing that way then I'll have to take my chances landing short. I just like to save all my luck for when I land in a small copse of trees. :)

you might to choose to run it in there if the green was tiered and not holding your ball on the fly!!!
Just a potential explanation to choose the bump and run from 50 yards...
