How come golf is so knackering?

Golf is not knackering for me. I don't get tired after playing. A five mile walk carrying a light bag of kit interspersed with a few swishes of a club should not tire you out. If it does, it is your level of general fitness and not the game that is the reason.

I am pretty fit so would not expect to feel tired at all after golf. I play squash about 4 times a week and am county standard so get a proper workout every time. Squash is the best game there is for fitness as when you play at a decent level, you burn 1600 calories per hour.

In fact, Squash is the best game there is full stop!

Stop smoking, get in shape then have two games of squash a week would be my advice to anyone who finds golf a physical challenge. After 6 months of this, golf will not make you feel tired! Either that or you will be dead and won't care anyway!

High impact though, probably just as bad for your joints as road running

I'll happily play 36 holes and we do that in the (hilly!) Lakes each June for 5 days. THEN I am totally pooped !

For sure it is mentally tiring and after 36 holes I'm a bit weary. I always drink a litre of squash over 18 holes and eat a couple of cereal bars - 4 hours without either food or drink would be impossible for me !

I did wear my running GPS round the course once for interest - 5.5 miles.

I don't think you need a high level of fitness to play golf.

The reason some probably find it tiring is because how many are actually out in the fresh air for 4 hours, other than playing golf? Not very often I reckon. How many walk more than perhaps 1/2 mile? Not many.

So, unless you're a runner, play squash or have some kind of fitness regime, then tiredness will kick in.

One thing that always mystifies me, is that I can walk around golf course for upwards of 4 hours, and feel pretty good, yet half an hour to an hour round the shops with the wife and I'm looking for the coffee shop for a drink and sit down cos I'm knackered!:).

I tend to feel tired after hacking my way round on the way to an 80 - it's amazing how energised you get to feel when you are shooting the lights out, you never want the round to end. That's just mental tiredness/ exasperation.

ive noticed a healthier breakfast has led to better scoring, gone are the small club breakfast days, scrambled egg on toast seems to fuel better scores.

I don't get tired playing golf, but I've played the last 2 days now and noticed a pain in my shin when I went to fetch my daughter from school today.
