depends how hard the wind in blowing. 100 is a funny distance for me at the minute since i dropped the 52! can i move out to 120? ;)

dissapointed not to hit the green. when i get into trouble i usually try to lay up to the red marker 110yards and ill be a bit sickened not to get down in 3 from there!

1st post, so hello everyone.

Good afternoon and welcome to the forum...

With regard OP's question... Saturday, just gone, I had five 'full shots' of 100yds or thereabouts into the green... Twice I left myself with good opportunity of a single putt [converting one of them]... Once was really only a two putt chance [made]... Another was a slight 'duff' and came up short into a bunker... And the one I don't wish to remember... After two good shots on a par 5 I was in position A only to make a complete and utter horlicks of my third... Hole went downhill from that point carding a seven ... That was one of my better days it can be a whole lot worse but occasionally it can be better :)...

Bizarrely I find I can get closer from nearer 150 yds out than I do from 100 yds

You are not alone. My mate should just try to put himself at the 150 mark on each hole, he'd score much better. He is laser guided with his 8iron in his hand, a wedge - not so much...

Interesting stats from the PGA Tour...

Closest on average from 75 - 100 yards is just under 12' and that's the best in the world.

Hackers like me would do well to get anywhere on the green.

The PGA stats mean nothing to us though. There pins positions are designed to draw them to the right landing spot, not as close as you can get. They are also averaged over alot more golf than we play.

That very info was the reason I asked.
Most of us get very annoyed when not getting very close with a wedge in our hands, but not even the pro's get very close all that often.
It's just that there putting is so superior to ours and they get U&D more often.

Somewhere on the green from which I can reasonably hole out. Definatly not on the wrong tier and not above the hole! I hole far more longer putts from below the hole on the correct tier than anywhere else!

Now....delighted to hit the green
40 years ago I would be dissapointed if I did not put it inside 10/12 yards.

Welcome Stuey.
Good point. I have been slow coaching my playing partner for a couple of years. He could hit the green most times from 100 yards with a punchy 9 iron. I advised him to lay up/play safe to that distance on the longer holes and it made quite a difference to his scoring.

Depends on the wind for me.

I'm reasonably tidy from 100 and in, so in normal conditions more often than not I'll give myself a good chance at a 1 putt.

Wind behind me, I'd expect to get in 1 putt range again. Wind in the face or from the sides then I'll try and use a 7i or something and run it in lower if I can, if there are no obstacles at the front , so on the green would be a reasonable result.

Such a good question.

This is something I regularly consider when pitching to a green and review how close I want to get against two main factors.

1. Likelyhood of distance from the pin selected being achieved / or the likelyhood that going at the pin will come off (kind of the same thing) - I do this as many factors come into account such as pin location, type of green, ball lie, angle and also weather conditions.

2. Worst type of putt/shot that can result from missing the pitch - this is done as I am trying to limit the damage that can happen if I am going to be aggressive.

Obviously these scenarios dont always work out and it can be seriously wrong, but I do it this way to cover both bases of aggression and protection. Sometimes I will go at the pin or beyond it to get it to pull back but every time I will be happy with the ball being in the same quarter as the pin.

I don't have a particular average distance, but I would say that I am regularly within 20-30ft.

A bit of a long winded response, apologies.

Ash!!

Wouldn't be looking to be outside 20' from 100yds. It's the perfect number for a stock 54* for me. I'm thinking up & down from that range.

Damn, I was waiting for more 20 h/cappers to say they expect 10-15ft then I was going to post that!

Now the thread has quickly become "anywhere on the green".

100 yards is a damn awkward distance as its 10-15 yards shorter than a full 54 degree wedge for me so on the green on the correct side of the hole is what I'd class as acceptable. I aim for 115 (full 54 wedge) or 125 (full 48 degree wedge) if I can as they require no swing manipulation to achieve. I'd far rather gauge how often I hit my intended or good miss landing area on approaches than feet to the hole as it's far more key to good scoring imho.

We have relatively small greens and so middle of each from 100 yards is going to give you not much more than 20 feet on any of them. I want to do some work with my teaching pro from 60-100 yards before next season. This year I've been better but I could be better. I tend to lay up on the par 5's and some of our longer 4's and would like to give myself better birdie chances

On the green from 100 yards.

From say 50 I'd like to give myself a putt I have a good chance of making.
