Almost every Saturday through the season we have competitions off the medal tees. Entry is £2 and paid at pro shop before start.

It appears that for 1st or 2nd in each class you get a voucher and sweep money, 3rd and 4th gets sweep money only.

The sweep money can be taken out in cash and spent anywhere ! The "vouchers" are entered into the pros book and recorded under your name and you can spend the value in the shop.

What do other clubs do ? and do you think that being forced to spend the "voucher" money in the pro shop is reasonable ???

Pretty much standard practice at the clubs i've been a member of,and a con to be honest.
Pro takes money then pays out winnings in vouchers, that have to be used in his/her shop,so in effect they are conning people out of half there winnings, because they will make on the 100% mark up on goods.
Its the same where 2's pools are paid in balls, the members pay in say £100 and the pro offers £100 worth of balls as prize's,which in truth cost less than half that.

I won last Sunday's "gold letter" comp £55 in cash from the sweep + a big cup and a voucher to come at the presentation night. Put the £55 towards a new lob wedge with the Pro as my current one is pretty worn

Alan, we don't pay an entry as such. It's £1.50 sweep and £1.50 2's sweep.
All winnings go in our account with the pro.
I don't really mind this as there's always something that I'll spend it on in the shop whereas if it was paid in cash it would just go on beer.

We pay $4 to enter on a Sat and $ 1 for the sweeps.

Main prizes are Meat packs and balls for two's .

The sweep pays out in cash, best I've heard of is $160 for two two's, rolls over if no one wins

We can get a voucher or the money goes into the pro shop - and to be honest I fully support our Pro's and try to get all my stuff from them - They are part of the TGI golf chain so they are the same price as all the others around, much friendlier than the internet and no hassle when there is problems with the goods.

As an aside; how are your 2s winnings paid out? At ours, it's divided between the number of players who get a 2 - regardless of how many you actually get. Eg 4 payers score a 2 with one of them scoring two of them. The pot is divided 4 ways - and the one who got two doesn't get a double share.

I'm fine with the pro getting you to spend the winnings in his shop via a voucher or account, let's face it fellas he's not doing all the organising and hassle of collecting pennies and paying out because he's a charity or all round good egg! He's a business and it's his living. I'd imagine he'd be happy to pay out cash if the members paid him a fee for standing all day collecting the sweep money.
Some might say it's part of his job, and I'd be hard pressed to disagree with you, in the same vein it's part of his job to sell goods and make a living so it balances out in my opinion.

That's totally wrong IMO, 2's should be divided by the number of 2's and not the number of players, it's common sense and more importantly, fair!

Yesterday, a member of a neighbouring club told me that their Hole in One pool reached £3,000 last year and they decided to hold a special competition to use up the money.

Ours are all paid in vouchers, which can either be spent in the pro shop or put on your bar card.
The amounts are set and quite often the amount paid out is nowhere near the amount taken in. I'm still not sure how I feel about that.

2's is all in all out, split between the number of 2's.

Unless the number of people participating in comps fluctuates dramatically,i'd be asking some serious questions about where the money is going.

We have the same thing, pro shop vouchers only. 4 prizes £40, £20 and £10 for top 3 plus lowest gross (never won that so no idea how much it is). Costs £2 to enter and normally well over the 50 or so entrants needed to break even so there is always a profit but not sure if that goes to the club or the pro. 2s club costs a £1 and the money is split and handed out in pro shop credit.

I suppose my issue is that comps are effectively a 'tax' on maintaining a handicap. It is sometimes so difficult to arrange to hand in a general play card that paying to enter comps is the only way of maintaining an accurate handicap. Would anyone enter less comps (bear in mind there is one at my club every week) and play more fun golf if you could hand in your card after every round at no cost and have your handicap adjusted accordingly.

Over here in NI we get vouchers that can be spent in any proshop or shop affiliated with the golfing union of Ireland (covers north and south), I choose to sign mine and use them in our pros shop as the guys can get me anything I need fairly quickly. Sweeps and 2's go straight into our shop account.
