Why do you enter competitions?

I don’t really understand your point of view. Stableford is a stroke play format, the only time it differs is when you have a real blow up hole, which is generally seldom. How often do you score more than a nett double bogey?

I think most people think of their score against par. If I make a 3 on a par 4, I call it a birdie not a 3 pointer.

When I play stableford I record my gross score, I let the app calculate the points at the end, with WHS I can’t be bothered to calculate the number of strokes I receive each time I play. Also I pay no attention to stroke index. Maybe that means I’m not a stableford aficionado but I still enjoy the format as much as medal.
As I said. The regular weekend stablefords are off the yellows and £3.50 to enter. I’d rather play off the back tees and I’ll save the money for a coffee after the round. I don’t get any particular excitement or sense of competition from playing a stableford, or even a medal these days. Playing a strokeplay format where the winner could potentially not finish every hole feels silly to me.

I'm like this. The computer works it out at the end so we don't have to. I actually quite like the suspense of not knowing my score until the end.

But it relies on the person whose card you're marking having correctly worked out their course handicap x 0.95. Not difficult, but in my experience they never do. And it's not my problem.
We have 2 brothers off 25 & 23, nice guys, been members over 20 years, absolutely dread playing any other comp but a Medal with them, they have absolutely no idea how to mark a score card correctly, we get printed stickers which tell you exactly what their handicap is for the day and they still can’t work them out.

All they’ll do regardless of format is write down the number of strokes you tell them and I mean tell them, often repeating ourselves 4 or 5 times.

Checking scorecards at the end is a chore, they’ll miss holes out, write the score down in one column playing 4BBB, absolute pain.😂😂

Does the committee not do that for them?

Or an app that is used for scoring?

The 95% aspect does seem pretty pointless to me.

Neither of the clubs where I've been a member have the printed stickers or cards. There's a start list online and in the clubhouse but the guys I'm talking about never seem to check that list or work out their PH from MyEG.
But they do expect their marker to know their running Stableford score, even though they could be doing it themselves on the card they're marking.
It's the same people who turn up and have to ask you what time we're teeing off and which tee boxes we're using and whether it's medal or Stableford and if it's PL and whether they need a waterproof...

So, it’s the people that are the main problem, I get that.

haven’t played in a comp for about 3 years now and couldn’t care less.

Play plenty of golf, with mates during the week and wife at the weekend. With the boys we play match play mainly, or some variation of perch if we’re only 3. Quite happy enjoying golf without any pressures of a comp. Don’t care if I never play in another comp ever again.

Do you play mixed comps with your wife? I expect that they are good fun.

One more reason for me to enter competitions.

The £1 optional 2s sweeps.

I seem to turn £30 into between £50 and £100 in pro-shop credit over a year. Putting for dough - love it.
