How Are Your Members Applying the 3 Minute Rule?

I saw recently on tv a big Pro tournament where they were all looking in bushes etc and I was thinking, that seems a long three minutes.
But then, so it does when watching an egg boil for that long😀

Important to remember that the time starts when the player starts searching and not anybody who gets there before them.

LOL - but it's not mine - mine wasn't quite so round...

Even as a total beginner to the game - when the only balls were a few such as Dunlop 65s, Slazengers and Penford Aces - I could tell that this was a rubbish ball. I would rather play with any of the rest - even if they were cut or out of shape - than a PE. But just occasionally it was the only ball in the bag that wouldn't be whirring (not whizzing) after I'd hit it.

Thanks for prompting a fond memory of my father, a fine scratch golfer who passed on all his enthusiasm for golf to me but alas too little of his talent. His favoured ball was the Dunlop 65. No doubt as a laddie I played with many a hand-me-down one.

I have memories ofDunlop 65s from the first year I played. 5 brand new balls used up in one round due to smilies. The other memory is of hitting one shot ' perfectly' landing on the back end of a smallish green and the ball finishing on the front edge. Two lessons in 1 round about Balata golf balls.

Box of 12 - all brand new - make me an offer (a joke raffle prize)

Actually the Commando was the ball I'd get from Santa in my Christmas Stocking. Usually just one - wrapped up.

Finding a Dunlop 65 on Deaconsbank Muni was for me like finding a nugget of gold. I couldn't afford to buy any golf balls (and other than at Christmas and my Birthday neither could my parents) and I only played pick-ups. - and I didn't find that many as they kept the rough short around that track.

If I saw someone with an actual stopwatch to time a search I would think they're a bit of a tosser as that strikes me as overzealous and a bit anal. We play for enjoyment not to catch each other out on infringements. A glance at the time is enough. I probably wouldn't say anything about it though. Luckily it's never happened.

In any round I've ever played, the player who's ball it is just approximates the time. Often they give up early knowing they're unlikely to find it. If they do search for too long someone may say "I think that's 3 minutes gone mate" and you wrap it up, ball lost. Nobody ever has a problem with this method.

Think in general terms your sentiments are right and by and large it is self-policed. I have taken to having a cursory look at my watch looking for my ball so I can self-regulate but if I am looking for others how stringent, even in the monthly stableford are we really going to be? There are one or two at my club where you do have to be fairly robust in saying the rules have now changed and its only 3 minutes and perhaps you're close to that (or else they'd be there until it was found!!) but in general terms if its apparent its not being found quickly most will spend a couple of minutes and then move on

I try to remember to look at my watch when a search starts so we don’t end up going badly over 3 minutes. Not exact as it could be 1 second after the minute changed or 55 seconds - but it’s better than nothing.

for a bounce game i def wouldn't bother, but a SW is no different to timing on your phone or watch..

What would you do on this..?

you are playing the q final of a club Match play knock out... you are in the middle of the fairway and your oppo is in waste high rough, neither of you is wearing a watch, and your oppo searches for his ball until he finds it, poss well over 3 mins maybe double that. but you have no way of knowing, what would you do?

I would probably mention that I thought he took way over the 3min limit - but go no further than that if he declined to agree. Who knows - he might not know the new limit and agree he was way over.

And then I would take a learning point that in an important match I should be aware time an opponent is taking in his search and flag up when I feel 3mins is just about up. So he knows that he's effectively on a 'warning' that I might raise an objection if he goes on for 6mins and then wants to play on with the ball he might eventually find.

I think if it was double you would know. I have phone on me for GPS so I can glance at the screen for the time, as someone said above it's not precise but you'd know if a 4th minute ticked by on there that it was definitely over 3 minutes so you'd have to say "that's your lot". I don't feel any more preciseness than that is needed, even if it is a match play final. I guess I'm easy-going though. If he finds the ball and it could have been 3 mins or could have been 3 mins 10 seconds and I'm none the wiser, it really doesn't bother me.

You have made it known (through your posts) that playing by the Rules is not one of your priorities.
