To all my friends in the UK and Ireland: is there any chance you'll take us back? We lead the world in COVID-19 infections and now all our major cities are dealing with out of control protests because some of our police think it's OK to kill African Americans. On top of that our president has absolutely no clue on how to respond and he's just a jerk. I know you all have problems too, but you seem to at least know how to handle them. I've visited there several times and watch a lot of your shows on Britbox. I want to move to Midsomer. I think I can handle a weekly murder as long as the Inspectors Barnaby are on the case. Also I love the fact that every village seems to have one church, one golf course and two pubs.

Yep, we'll have you back. Just swear allegiance to King George, and we'll forget the last 230 odd years. And we'll especially forget everything since Jan 20 2017...
(But you do know our pubs are currently shut though...:( )

Aw, it can't be that bad, most of our good golfers move there - some even taking on odd accents ?

Besides, with the bombardment of US Americanisms here for language and the like, it often feels like becoming the 51st/52nd/53rd state(s) may be more likely! ??

Thanks, but it is quite bad here. Like your beloved Churchill once said "one can always count on the Americans to do the right thing; once they've exhausted every other option!"

Every country has groups of people who just want to riot and cause mayhem. The skill is to keep the lid on it. Unfortunately the USA seem not to be able to do this.
We are long overdue one. You never know what tips the balance.

i think you would have a shock, the UK is nothing like Downton Abbey or Midsomer murders.... not forgetting Hamish Macbeth for Scotland

One place In would not want to live in in the UK. Their murder rate is so far above the average for the UK

Your quaint idea of English villages is far from the truth for the vast majority, most lost their pubs years ago and the churches cannot get a vicar.

I live in what could really be described as a very small town rather than a village we are lucky to have two 'pubs' stlll but that is because one is really a hotel and the other, where I sometimes make an appearance, is owned by a couple who have sufficient money coming in from other sources to ignore the fact the pub loses money and they really enjoy the social side of running a pub. I have been in sometimes and there are only 3 or 4 others in there. The church has been without a vicar for over 2 years.

One of the worrying aspects about what is going on in America is how many are going to die when the rioting has stopped because all social distancing in those cities has gone to pot. That also includes the entire police force for those cities.

When you have tear gas in your face you are never going to stop touching your face for a very long time afterwards.

If you spot a church steeple in the distance, there’s a pub nearby ??

I get it. Having been raised in a small Southern town in the 50s and 60s, I can assure you it was nothing like Andy Griffith's Mayberry.

The village I grew up in has less than a 300 people but had two pubs not long before I moved there at the end of the 80s.

Post office went not long after we moved there too, it had a couple of places of worship too but the smaller one closed and was converted into a house.

My take is that the pubs serve as community centers. I've noticed from my visits that people of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds tend gather at local pubs. This occurs sometimes here in the States, but it's not the norm. No matter how hard we try, we still segregate based on race, religion and economic standing. Maybe I'm wrong, but I still envy the sense of unity
I perceive to exit in your communities.

were a nation of Brexit v Remainers. Now our Trump has said we will leave, all of us have to fall in line and accept it. We were told to disregard everything the experts or MSM say.

Choosing between Trumpland and Bojaland is a sad option. While coloured Americans have a known problem, we refuse to acknowledge the big social divide in this country. Vast swathes of this country (50% of the children) live in poverty. Food banks are only option to many, yet we have a govt that does not want us to believe it. Now with Corona, we can blame a virus rather than immigrants for the next few years.
The one common factor is that neither of us have a credible opposition in Parliament. Politics has reduced to caricatures and personal attacks.
/rant over.

You are welcome anytime. We will be able serve you some chlorinated chicken too...

I guess the grass always looks greener in your neighbor's yard. We're both having problems. I think you hit the nail about poverty. Income inequality is the major problem. The question is how do we start the process of fixing it. Anyone over here that tries is labeled as a Socialist or a Communist. I support Joe Biden. He certainly isn't perfect but he's a decent human being.

Now, let's go back to the other forums and talk about golf. That is my oasis in this desert of turmoil.

One of the things that happened in our village, many years ago, was that the Church does not have a car park and on a Sunday morning all the church goers parked in the pub car park almost opposite.

The pub changed owners and the new owner stopped them from parking in there because none of them used the pub.

The pub is now a community cafe and the owners put gates across the car park entrance so nobody could park when they are closed.
