Heart Troubles .....

You didn't mention how you were diagnosed - after angina, a heart attack or as an expected finding during a medical, but the general principles are:

Don't smoke. At all. Ever.

Avoid type II diabetes - manage your weight and diet, especially if you have a tendency to put weight on your gut.

A little drinking is OK. There is some evidence that modest alcohol consumption is beneficial, but you are definitely better off with red wine than beer. But more than a modest amount is bad news.

I was taken to A&E a few months ago with chest pains. They gave me a GTN spray, ECG and a load of tests there and then. They let me out that evening and I got a follow up appointment up with my GP. The GP referred me to a Cardiologist and over the past month I've been having tests. They confirm the blockage in the right coronary artery jus before Christmas.

Cheers for the advise. I don't smoke (the occasional cigar, but I have stopped that too now). I don't really drink, just a nice glass of red now and again or a glass of quality scotch when the mood takes. Don't touch beer anymore!

Weight has shot up over the last 18 months, but only 15 stone so not massive (althoughg I usually am about 12 stone to be fair)

Cheers pal.

Morning all,

Just thought I'd resurrect this thread as sort of quick "hello again!"

I'm back playing golf, finally, but only managing 9 holes still at the moment. The last few months have been some of the worst I've had but I want to put all that behind me now. New medication, new lifestyle and a new outlook. Time to get onwards and upwards, and get back to the game we all love so much. Probably not the best time to get back into as we slowly slip into autumn and winter over the coming months but if I don't do it now I never will!!!

Joined my club again and ready to go.

Cheers everyone.

Strange stegsie, but when reading the posts I never looked at the dates and was gonna say it's not the end of the world, then read you have resurrected the thread 18 months later.
in that time me old man has had a triple by pass, and his Lueakemia is in remission and me father in law has had a pigs heart valve fitted. In essence they are both fit as a fiddle.
there is a massive differance between pa and pa in laws attitudes since though.
me old man who never smoked or drank loads, has listened to every word the consultants have said.
Pa in law has carried on as per normal, drinks like a trooper, lager and whisky every days. Two days after his pigs valve being fitted his wife was taking lager into the hospital. The doctors and nurses gave them both a rollicking.
Nottingham City hospital, did a fantastic job on them both.
dealt with loads of people who have had heart problems through work and the ones that listen to the correct advise and take it on board carry on with "normal lives".
those that don't, well struggle.
good luck with it Stegsie me man.

Cheers everyone.

Had pre-op for a stent but they had to postpone it as I had an infection. Ended up going into the Heart & Chest hospital anyway but to have a tooth out as the dentist wouldn't do it due to my heart troubles! Ended up in the same ward, same operating theatre and everything like that - a decent dress rehearsal if nothing else! Infection should be cleared now but they have put me on some new pills whilst I wait. On a load of new medication and as I am still relatively young (late 30s) they reckon they can hold off a stent for another few months and see how the tablets go; no worries. I was at a pretty low point about 6 months back but I have got my head around it a little bit more and am determined to just crack on. There are many, many, people who have similar blockages and might not necessarily know - they're a heart attack waiting to happen. At least mine has been spotted and they are doing all they can to treat the symptoms and given me all the advise I need about managing it (which I am taking on board!). It's not often that the doctor tells you to not do too much gardening due to the stresses of lifting etc, but play as much golf as possible as long as I use a trolley and know my limits! I should have got him to write a prescription for that and I'd have framed it!

@Tashy - I hope things start looking up for the family mate, sounds like you've all had a rough ride there. Take care, mate, appreciate the kind words.

Might have said in my pm, I'm 20yrs past my first heart attack @ 37. The last one a few years back, the 3rd @53, was way more interesting. Sadly, I'm the knob who doesn't quite follow Doc's orders, but as some know I eat and drink well. Came home early today feeling life lukewarm death.... went to the Doc's, and got rollocked. Back up a stone to 17st, and BP up to 175/105... really should keep up with the meds.

If I shuttle off this mortal coil tomorrow I've had one cracking life, and fitted in some mega experiences. Unselfishly, sometimes you've got to think of the damage to those you leave behind, if you go too early, e.g. #2 daughter gets married in two weeks time. I have to be fit enough to make that speech, and not spoil her day.

Try and do the right things, but don't become a boring grey young fart!

Hope things steadily improve for you, scouse.

When your up for 18, get along to Lee park with me and gary from derry, an open invitation for you.

Hi pal, yes I got the PM. I am trying hard to listen to doctors orders, as hard as that is. I often fall off the wagon (it's food for me - I do love my food!)

Hope all goes well with the wedding, mate. Enjoy it!
