I think we all know that this country goes H&S mad from time to time, well our course has jumped on the band wagon. I was at the AGM on Thursday gone and after all the new appointments, men's captain, ladies captain, competition, sorry club competition secretary, they got to any other business, where health and safety reared its ugly head.

Someone had mentioned the amount of times someone hits wayward shot and doesn't shout fore and cited the pros on the TV as a prime example, also the number of times a fellow player gets hit or is victim to a very close call.

So he proposed and somehow got a seconder that all golfers at our course need to wear a high vis vest, this has not gone down well with the members. The club did assure us that they would buy the vests and that they would be available from the spike bar prior to the start of a round.

I don't mind so much as I quite like fluorescent colours, but one senior who only ever wears black wasn't happy, much to the amusement of all at the AGM.

We have gone one step further, from today you must wear steel toe capped footwear, eye goggles a hard hat, gloves and ear defenders.

Your trolley has to be pat tested annually and lone players have been banned.

The North Downs Way runs down the side of our 17th. H&S sign at the tee notifies golfers to be aware of the public on the pubic footpath. Pity you can't see the footpath for the trees. Ah well.

Isn't there a course somewhere where you have to wear a red polo shirt as the course is on some sort of public park, it's so they can easily identify golfer's from the general public.

Do you not think that the hi-viz vest is a good look for golf then?

Just think if it gets hot you can just play in the vest like you see on a summers day roadwork gang.

(enjoyed the try though)

The shirt my playing partner wore at the weekend bore far too much of a similarity to a high vis jacket, albeit his shirt was a touch brighter!!! Not ideal for the eyes on an early start when youve had a late night
