have you played a course if...

Its a shame when its only xx yards that differentiates the whites from yellows

I know it'll inevitably be that way on some holes but in the main it should be a different hole in terms of course management, hazard avoidance and even direction of tee shot if possible

I took part in a seniors away open stablford comp last week, and some idiot [ IMO] decided it was to be to played from the back tees.
Normally not a great problem , but the first tee shot requires about 170 yard carry over water, TREES AND REEDS TO THE LEFT AND OOB ON THE RIGHT WTF.

In my 3 ball 2 of us didn't carry it , the game before mine also had 2 out of 3 in the water, the game behind 1 in but 2 cleared the water.

FFS this was a seniors open, ages between 55 and 80 . Really:angry:

Rant not over yet

Take the 8th at Fundy's course.....170-something off the yellows, 200+ off the whites...
Completely different hole.
My last club had a par 3 of 140 off the yellows and 210 off the whites......

They have a new forward tee there now too where it plays 140ish too so full range is prob 80 yards (140-220)

Is it completely different or just longer ?

When i have played it the difference just seems to be the length so just hit a different club

Yup completely different hitting long iron/hybrid to a green you cant really see (just top half of pin) to hitting a short iron/wedge over the trap on the right to a green you can see most of.

Its actually a better hole off the yellows than the whites!

Nothing disappoints me as much as going to a marquee course and playing way forward ..

For example ive played Mount Juliet & K club in proper comps & in society outings ,

ive scored better in the society outing with forward tees ,

I enjoyed the experience more off the proper comp tees..

Funny how we all moan about slow play, but want to play the course at its longest.dont know why people want to make the game any harder when not playing in comps.

The problem is, and it has happened at away courses, where tees have been moved significantly forward, it really can make a difference to the layout of the hole and how it's played. Even from the standard yellow tee box, there could be hazards to contend with but move them significantly forward and these become obsolete. Not good if this is supposedly one of the stand out holes.

I totally get the need to protect tee boxes and why many clubs don't allow members or visitors off the whites except for matches and comps. However most tee boxes are large enough to accommodate a different position every day and so areas can be rotated out of play for periods of recovery quite easily.

What I find interesting is that the same people who seem to want the freedom to play off longer courses are the same ones who moan about slow play on this forum. It is quite obvious that allowing all players to play off the whites will mean slow play caused by the less able golfers struggling.
But then, our forum members are never the cause of slow play.....

That is actually a very good point. The makeup of a hole could be totally changed based no tee position.

Thanks, I agree entirely with your fishing expedition!

Golf is always too hard, for everyone - but you can still enjoy different aspects of the game.
As a big'ish hitter I can get a little bored at times, of not getting to use my driver as much as I'd like, when playing off the yellows on some courses.
