have you played a course if...

Yellows = Tee of the day
White = Competition only at our place....includes all knockouts, team matches etc

I agree it is annoying when tees are moved miles forward but on the whole I'd never expect to play off the whites anywhere unless it was a competition. Most places you are only talking 10-20 yards on most holes anyway. We do have a lot of comps at our place though so I'd say I still play much more often from the Whites overall but I do enjoy a game off the Yellows once in a while just to vary it a bit. Don't see this as a big issue tbh.

This does seem to be all about length

Do folks feel their prowess or competence is being challenged when asked to tee it forward & this is disguised under the banner of not being able to play the ‘full course’

Surely changing the hole length presents a different challenge for you to overcome, perhaps rethinking club selection, strategy and hazard awareness. After all it’s a pretty poor course than only represents a challenge from one tee box and they are all supposed to be measured courses regardless of tee colour

The example in the OP is a bit different due to remodelling taking place which seems to have necessitated the change to a shortened course but usually yellows would have been acceptable

I’ve had some really interesting enjoyable rounds when doing a scramble format because I find myself facing shots I don’t normally play, isn’t this what changing tee's should do too? (and if your back tees and yellows are on the same tee box on half the holes, somethings gone totally wrong)

The remodelling at Q do L had been finished for 6 months odd. They just don't want visitors playing anything like the full course.

Sure, some don't want to play a long course, some don't want to play it short. It's about choice.

If I am paying 20 quid, any tee is fine. If I am paying 200 then I want a choice. Wentworth is 400 plus. Happy playing off the yellows then? I'm not. Especially if they aren't anywhere near the yellow markers.

Well there's two points as i read it

Tee marker nowhere near the measured course (almost like winter settings)

and secondly not being able to have free choice of tee boxes (even if they were aligned to measured course)

For the first I think it should be made known to what extent the course is playing shorter prior to paying so you can choose to play or not
For the second I do wonder if some feel emasculated being told to tee off from the yellows (I'll wager they'll all still claim a hole in one if it happened off a yellow tee!)

I have no issue with being told what Tee to play off when visiting another course.
My issue at my place is not being given the chance to try different clubs or shots on the ones were the tees are so different, can't really think of another sport that does that, I'm sure 100 metre runners don't only run 90 metres before the event

The 'measured course' for runners is normally 100m, 200, 400 etc etc (but as it happens I recall 60 meter indoor sprints too) so not really different to golf with its different lengths

i doubt the 100m guys moan that they're not allowed to run a whole circuit :D

So whichever distance they choose, they train for, we are expected to compete off the whites with no practise, probably not much point being the fastest or best over 50 metres if you can't run 55

Training and practice are different

You can certainly train to hit the ball the required distance at the range but I do have some sympathy if you never get to practice it outwith a comp although I'd temper that by saying if you're always playing off the whites whats so special about any comp day (even a board comp)

Surely you know what shot to play of each tee and is the differen really that big between a tee of the day and the whites ?

Take the 8th at Fundy's course.....170-something off the yellows, 200+ off the whites...
Completely different hole.
My last club had a par 3 of 140 off the yellows and 210 off the whites......

Is it completely different or just longer ?

When i have played it the difference just seems to be the length so just hit a different club

I think I do, but it would be nice to try different clubs, course management etc, it's not always about distance, 2 of the holes bring hazards in to play which are not there off the yellows, would be nice to mess up in a practise round rather than a comp!

I would prefer to be fully tested when a comp comes around - I play enough club including club matches and KO so fully aware of the shots from the white tees and most should be when playing their home comps.

Fair point, not going to lose sleep over it, it is what it is, it would just be nice, imo, if as a fully paid member of my course if I could choose to play it differently the odd time.

Take the brabazon for eg. If i played it off the yellows or whites is a easy track. however, off the blues its a different course. All of a sudden every fairway bunker is in play and those pins that were tightly tucked away were easy to hit with a pw or 9 iron. a 5 iron is a different matter

Regardless of T&Cs and accepting that work has to be done, if a course is advertised as being 6000 yards long on whatever colour tee box then give or take a few yards either way that is what I would expect to pay for. If I was losing 80 yards per hole that would add up to around 25% of the course being missed so I would expect a similar reduction in the green fee.

And you are a Cat 1 Golfer and like the team at our place, they play our course 2-3 times a week in team matches, your game is probably very consistent, I'm an average golfer looking to improve and turning up once a week in comps is frustrating,

Surely playing once a week allows you to understand and learn the course layout and distances required for you to practise ?

Surely you can see sometimes it would be nice to be able to practise on the actual layout,

But the layout isn't massively different just a little bit longer or shorter or the courses I have played. Very rare I have played a course where the white tee is significantly different beyond extra length

Beyond that it's hitting the shot a certain length and using the club I know will go the distance.
