A friend of mine (Hamish) was playing for the RAF against the Army.
They both missed the green left.
Army bod got there first and saw one ball short and the other ball towards the back of the green.
He looked at the first ball and walked on by and stood by the second ball (which was closer to the flag).
Hamish played his shot stone dead for a 4. Then the Army guy looked again at his ball and announced it wasn't his. Im Sorry, you've played the wrong ball. My hole.
Hamish was fuming but was his fault for not checking.
Hamish mentioned what had happened to the RAF Captain Jerry.
Jerry then mentioned it to the Army Captain Ian.
Ian spoke to the Army player who never played for the Army again.

Not strictly cheating but have you had to accuse someone and how did you do it?
To his/her face, to your playing partners or comp officials?

No!
Reason being they were usually that bad it wasn't going to make a difference plus in my view they are only cheating themselves.
I've played with guys who move the ball in the rough......frequently, and one who I caught teeing it up on the fairway:eek:

Key though is I never play with them again.

Yes, one captains day at a previous club I played with the eventual winner who threw a ball down in the rough. I reported it to the pro asking who I then complained to (was only really new to the club) and was told to just leave it as I couldn't prove it and as I was new to the club it would be my word against his. I then found out he had previous for this sort of thing :(. Thing is he was a cat 1 golfer and had no bloody need to do it.

If i was 100% certain I'd seen my playing partner cheating then I'd definitely pull him up on it there and then.

To not mention anything about it til afterwards is bad form imo. If the issue wasn't resolved there and then, I wouldn't think twice to report him.

I've never caught anybody cheating and hope I never will.

No, you are right Hamish should have looked at the ball , the other guy might have been genuine about not noticing but then again might have been his plan all along but he did not make your friend play the wrong ball. I ALWAYS when i have walked up to my ball be it the green or any other part of the course check that it is an AD333 has a line and my initials under the N.

Closest I've got is couple of weeks ago the guy whose card I was marking said he had a 5 on the hole, so had to call his attention to the branch he dislodged on his practice swing. The two other guys had noticed it too and were waiting to see if he called the penalty.

I reported one guy for playing off the wrong tees on the 9th hole (ladies as opposed to 15 yards back middle mens tees), turns out he had the best score that day net, as it was a society day, the organisers demoted him to second...

Played with a guy once who'd i'd gotten on fine with in the past. He asked for relief from a mole hill so I went over to check and agreed to the drop. He just picked it up and dropped it so I explained the rule to him so he did it again properly this time. I waited for him to play and he addressed the ball and it rolled about 3 inches away. Waited for him to call the penalty and replace the ball but he just played his shot and went to walk on. I pulled him up and asked him about the moved ball. His reply was "Give it rest ,stop being a ****"!! Instant red mist came down and I told him in no uncertain terms I wouldnt ever be playing with him again and that he should report to the pro after the round as I would be reporting him for cheating. I signed his card and gave it to him and walked in to report him. I was 1 under at the time with 4 holes to play so I was a little niggled.

I did report him but didnt ever hear anything about it. I never ever spoke to the guy again and quietly put it about that he was one to be watched if anyone ever played with him. I did win a board comp a year or so later and funnily enough I beat this guy on countback. Should have seen the smile and wink I gave him.

Hi all,

A couple of months back i decided to take up the game (and having a scream going from a 131 round to 96 on a par 72 - Suffolk) it intrigues me when i read on here about rule breaches and such like.

Can't understand why people leave it till the end though instead of pulling up the individual there and then so it can be rectified.

Anyway, reason for writing.
1. Where do i find out and read about the rules as i want to start going to play in competitions and having more fun.
2. What level do you have to be in order to go and play a club competition (i'm currently 26 HC) and nt annoy people as you aare not up to their standard. I did a round yesterday and if it was Stableford would have scored 33 to give you an idea of where i'm at.

Thanks, Steve

As an ex manager I have had to sort out many a squabble.
If you see something wrong you must sort it out there and then.
Once it reaches the clubhouse it becomes a case of 'he said, she said' and becomes very messy to sort out.
I have been threatened with the 'lawyers' many times.
I just ask them for thier lawyers contact details and that generally shuts them up.

Hiys Steve , a free copy of the rule book should be available in your club , the R&A website have some great quizes on the rules , also have a browse through the ASK THE EXPERTS section on here & finaly the Golf Monthly mag features a rules section in it every month , so loads of places to expand your knowledge , of course if your not sure the best is to ask BEFORE ya do something ,

Welcome along & Enjoy

Welcome!

Your club might/should have copies of the rule book (it's where I get mine) failing that the R&A website will help. As for the comps get stuck in 33 points is pretty decent so don't worry about that!

Playing in an open mixed foursomes event we watched a couple on an adjacent hole take the most 'elastic' two club lengths to drop under penalty from a gorse bush. When we got in we found they were at the top of the leaderboard. Spoke to one of the committee and stated that they had not dropped correctly under Rule28. The couple were asked for their version of the event and had not realised they were being watched as the tried to take the 'elastic' drop. They were DQ'd.

I caught myself cheating last year in the singles. I stupidly came out of the rough with a Srixon Z-STAR 4 when I had entered the rough my ball was a Srixon 1. Noticed as I was marking my ball on the green. Picked up and walked on! Loss of hole. Just shows you need to always double check your ball. I just saw the Z-STAR on the side of the ball and assumed that it was mine and played away!

May have been yours from a previous round craw.

We have a known cheat in our swindle, he's been at it for years, cheated he's own cousin in a knock out match, real underhanded. Everyone knows he does it but very few pull him. I take great pride in pulling him every time I play with him as it gets right into he's head.

In our last game he marked the ball in front of the ball on the green, when replacing it, the marker appeared behind the ball, gaining a couple of inches. I watched it as did everyone in the group. He was about 2-2,2ft from the hole I allowed him to line the putt up, few practice swishes, get all settled over the putt the pulled him on it, he couldn't see how 2 inches would make a difference, had a hissy fit, remarked and replaced the ball correctly and then missed the putt.

He's own partner admitted he thought he had seen him do the sane on a previous hole but as he wasn't 100% didn't say anything. We went on to win 4&3 ..... He's head was gone!

Yup refused to sign a playing partners card in a scratch junior open many many years ago then reported to the competition committee the liberal use of the leather wedge I had seen on the course. Turned out he had previous and was promptly disqualified

some of the examples given are clearly cheats, others stem from confusion and frustration.

i've seen the most honest individuals proceed 'outside the rules', and when questioned they can easily fall into the trap of saying (at the time) whatever they feel will make the issue go away quickest (without any real regard for their score etc) - most subsequently NR but the on course conversation can end up a millstone for all the wrong reasons.

equally you will get people who have been DQ'd for rules infringements because they didn't know better getting all hung up on their perception that this meant they were cheating; this happens a lot with parents when juniors are DQ'd!!!

as to the origional post, it could easily have been an honest mistake (having seen people pick up their own ball because they didn't recognise it and subsequently realise it was their's!) or it could have been a very poor attempt at gamesmanship that went wrong.

Guy I played with yesterday tried a couple of dodgy ones. I pulled him up for them straightaway. Sadly I've had to do it to him several times in the past, as have several guys in our roll up. Its minor stuff like teeing up in front of the markers. Not replacing his ball properly, and standing back of your putt to watch the line.
