Hard to believe it's been 10 yrs...

There is some right rubbish on this thread, written by people who are either too young or blinkered to know better.

Lyle's 7 iron from that trap was amazing. So was Christy O'Connor Junior's 2 iron at the Belfry. Langer chipping out of a tree was great and very memorable. Seve's Swiss masterclass from the trees was unforgettable. Seve's sand iron from the car park on his way to winning the Open at 19 years of age is another really obvious candidate and one I remember like it was yesterday - very vivid. Ditto Larry Mize's chip.

If anyone asked me to name the most memorable shot in golf though, it would not be one that happened in my lifetime as it was in 1935 at the Masters. Gene Sarazen's legendary 4 wood for an albatross to shoot up to joint leader with just four holes to play. This took him into a playoff which he then duly won. Quite amazing and no wonder it was labelled "The Shot Heard 'Round The World."

If you think Woods chip is the most memorable shot in golf then you should possibly get to know the history of the game a little better and then you might have a more valid opinion. That chip was dramatic but I only remembered it at all when I read other people's memories

Hold on Dave, the OP seems to be asking about the most memorable shot you have seen at the Masters in your life time. Not even Chrisd can remember Sarazen's albatross. I do remember his hole in one at the Open at the postage stamp though.

Shots don't have to be the most difficult though to be memorable. I watched Lyle collapse on the back nine on the Sunday, dunch one one in the water at 12, look out of it, late birdie on 16, and yes he played a great bunker shot on 18. To me though the most memorable part was his putt on 18, the dad jig afterwards, and the great joy I felt that he had won. I was shattered afterwards just watching.

That is not how I read it! "Anyone got a more memorable golf shot" was the question.... Yes - loads! :)

I also have very strong memories of Sandy's Open win. Duff chip etc.

If the question is the most memorable shot at the Masters that I have seen in my lifetime then that is different, I agree.

We need to take care not to criticise other people's opinions on this subject
There are no wrong answers, just accept that some people's ideas may be different from yours.
Certain posters will prefer shots from certain players, doesn't make it an invalid opinion

Thank you

I remember Lyle, Seve, Christy Jr and Mize, but I can't for the life of me remember Sarazen's shot. Must be too young for it. I don't remember ever seeing Young Tom playing either, but I hear he was good. Do you have to have seen something, even on video, for it to be memorable?

What about Seve's shot from the bunker at the 1983 Ryder Cup? Jack Nicklaus was impressed.

Ask about Masters moments and I'll come up with (in no order)
Mickelson of the pine straw
Bubba's hooking wedge
Lyle's bunker shot
Mize's chip
Woosnam holing out at 18

I think the Woods chip was good but it seems to have been blown out of proportion as some kind of golfing miracle

I don't think it was necessarily the quality of the shot that was so memorable, but the timing. 70th hole at the Masters when in contention, the way the ball took for ever to drop, and also the very loud commentary. The ball seemed to stop for an age before falling in. Pure theatre to me.

To me there is a difference between memorable shots, and just great shots, and a lot of it is down to who played it and the timing. Seve's chip at Lytham when he nearly holed it to beat Nick Price at the Open by a shot, was another memorable one for me. Also made more so to me that I went to that Open, and the buzz following Seve even in the first two rounds around was amazing.

Sorry I don't agree. As long as Woods didn't fluff that chip it was always going to finish very close, it's just luck it actually went in and the Nike marketing guys must have been wetting their corporate pants at the sight of the swoosh hanging over the edge of the hole.

Most of the other shots recalled required incredible skill and nerve to pull them off.

Funny how the commentator said he'd be lucky to get it inside dimarco's ball then ...
