Happy St Georges Day

The St Georges Cross was very much in the forefront of the crusades and the murder of millions muslims over in the holy lands

That part of our history is used to justify the banning of it

I never quite got that

Bearing in mind the crusades were dreamed up by Pope Urban of the holy roman empire, then acted upon by the French and Germans for the first effort

Only later did the English or Britons get involved.

Besides which. Anyone that takes offence at something that happened nearly a millennium ago needs to take a serious look at themselves.

Its primitive

I agree - some people hold grudges for a looooooonnnnnngggggg time

Be grateful of the country that has given them a better life and integrate into their culture. In the USA you see the S&S on the front of all houses, should be the same here.

In the USA you see a lot of other stuff also.

It is a very emotive subject and one that has be approached with egg shells.

We live in a multi cultural community now and we need to be tolerant on both sides

yes we should be able to fly the English flag without fear of upsetting people of that there is no question.

Whilst I agree fully that we shouldn't do anything to stop integration. And I know certain things like Christmas are celebrated less in city centre due to differing religions (I still think that is wrong). This is a case of showing support for England in England. Anybody who takes offence in this should leave**

** that would mainly be politicians who are just trying to score points with demographics!
I'm yet to meet a Muslim, Sikh, black, white, Scottish or irish that has a problem with St George Day, or St Patricks or Xmas for that matter.

And rightly so in some cases. Just take a look at your Avatar.

Regarding the Crusades: Get real, should we be holding grudges against the Normans, Danish, Norwegians, Germans et al. Do you really believe the stuff you post here or are you, as I suspect, just a sensationalist?

Thats a fight for justice as opposed to a grudge

And as for the crusades etc ask the people that find offense with it and why they hold a grudge.

The difference between a fight for justice and a grudge is only a time frame.

Ask them why! I'm not the slightest bit interested in why they might be offended by something that happened a thousand years ago, as I have said previously. If they are offended by the country that has given them a better life then please, either leave it or integrate. The choice is always there.

Unfortuantly it just doesnt happen that way and PC allows them their rights to be offended

Some things are offensive and should quite rightly be complained about; many many things aren't actually offensive. To quote Stephen Fry:

[h=1]“It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so infraction what."[/h]

I've already stated that my hospital trust won't allow any flying of the St Georges cross. However they were quite happy to have a St Georges day menu of "traditional" English fayre (lancashire hotpot, toad in the hole etc) which does seem to be sending mixed messages. I for one will always be fiercely proud to be English and to a degree also find it offensive that I am not allowed to have the freedom to voice my support for my own country less I upset the rights of others. It seems plenty is done by various councils to promote the celebrations of other nationalities, especially their religious beliefs. If I was so inclined and narrow minded, I could whinge to all and sundry how I'd find that offensive as a non believer.

The ground rules are set now. Councils, work places etc won't change their stance on St Georges day and nor will the governemtn ever bow to the call to make it a national holiday. That doesn't mean to say it shouldn't be celebrated. English and proud
