• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Happy chappy!

The second my glove starts to slip, it's a new one. Always keep a spare new in the bag. I need to get myself a PW, I don't have one, and end up using either my 9 iron or my 60 degree that I really don't like. It's a low bounce as well. Anyway, it's all about fun, and when it's not fun, it's usually about hitting trees and scaring birds lol

My 9 iron striking has become 100%. Always a nice centre hit no duff. Maybe is should get all my irons made to that length!!

Fun is the main bit. When a hobby becomes a chore it becomes a bore!

Keep it up. Keep playing as much as you can, and enjoy the good shots!! Try to work on getting your distances right with your irons. Something that has been helping me (target to break 100, currently on 100-104 average, so close!!!), is playing every hole as a Par 5. You can work hard at saving shots on the Par 3s, and try not to beat yourself too much on the Par 5s.

Also, if you have the facilities, try and practice putting as much as possible too. If you can try and get 15+ holes at the two putt mark (for now), then you will see shots the plummet.

I know it isn't grass, but my carpet in my hall gives me a good 20ft to practice along.

Most nights I set a cut out of paper on the ground & move to different distances.

My putting Saturday was 2 putts, except for 3 holes. 1 was a 3 putt & the other 2 were a single. One from 6-7 ft out.

I am looking for a stand bag at the moment as I am planning to get out for twilight once or twice a week while the weather is good.

I used to practice flop shots on my back garden and see how far I could lob it before it hit the path. Used to be quite good at it, until I got on the course and it came to a tight lie, I'd thin it a beezer. I don't know, I just don't think there's a better way to practice than just playing a course time after time. It takes a while but honestly it works.

I used to be a 120 golfer, now I'm under 100 more and more these days. 95 being my lowest recorded score so far. Just getting out on a course and feeling where the ball needs to go is a winner.

Well in a few weeks I have shaved 9 shots off my card....and it has been due to course time. A few more weeks & hopefully be under that's magic 100.....but I am not gonna bust myself if I don't get it in a few weeks....

It can be a cruel game at times.

I'm a massive fan of the Game Golf system. The data you get out of it, has helped me so much. Looking at scorecards and trying to remember how you dropped 2-3 shots on a hole is useless. Actually being able to see the shot you played, brings it back and is rather helpful. I just use the free iOS app for now, but I just might buy into the belt wearing system.

As far as making goals for yourself in your head, I don't know what else could be better than using it.

I haven't had any luck with game golf to the point I have deleted the app. I can never get a signal for it work.

I may look about for a belt device. Everything I have heard about them is good. Just a shame I haven't been able to test the app.

Keep chipping away matey and you'll soon be under the tonne, I was going to enter my first score card the other day so I could get my handicap but when it came in at 106 I thought better of it as I'm not really good enough to compete yet so I'd rather just enjoy the game for now although I will say I played on my own last Friday and I managed to par four or five holes and was only ever one over on the rest, I took 2 balls off the 18th/par 4 for the hell of it and I was on the green in 3 with both and 2 putted both for 2 fives so well chuffed with that, my problem is producing a good score when it matters !...

Ok, so Saturday I played.

Driving was awful....it took to the 16th to get past the ladies tee!!
The irons & wedges could not have behaved any better. Not a single duff or toe in sight!!
Putting was on fire and anything within 8-10 ft was either in or lipping out. Including one 17 maybe 18ft putt, little right to left break which I seemed to just read perfectly as it dropped in for a par on the longest par 5!
Other than that, the 16th ended up with a smashing 280+ yd drive.

Overall a good round. After every rubbish drive the 2nd shots & rest of the hole went spot on.

Walked away with 21 points so on the up. Increasing each time. I just need to get the driver back under control. I don't feel like I am doing anything different, but it's just not working. One drive out of the round went well.

Maybe I need a new big stick? Hmmm....anniversary this Saturday, I wonder if HID would stretch to that??

Driver is the hardest club to hit ..... Have you tried a 3 wood or maybe even an iron off the tee ? At the stage your at fairways are more important than distance !

I don't take a 3w off the tee as I can't seem to connect that well with it. I take irons off the tee if I am having a bad day with the driver.

The frustration is the driver will be spot on for 2-3 rounds then go rubbish for a couple of rounds. It then comes back good. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. It just misbehaves.

I don't feel like I set up any different. I am out again this sunday & I will just see how it goes.

I can have a bad day driving on the course, go to the range next day & it works fine. put me back on the course & it all goes to pot.
